Tree Bernstein Returns from the Peace Corp With Poetry!

November 14, 2017

Former Ventura College Adjunct Faculty Member and Ojai resident Tree Bernstein recent;ty returned to the US from a two year stint in the Peace Corp. Well known locally as  poet, Tree will be the featured reader on Thursday, November 16 in the EP Foster Library in the Topping Room. Poetry readings are held every Thursday at 7:30pm at the library located at 651 E. Main Street, Ventura. The series is curated and usually hosted by Ventura Country Poet Laureate Phil Taggart but this week  Friday Gretchen steps in. An open mic follows the featured reader. The event is free and open to the public, but donations for the poet are accepted.

Here are two poems by  Tree Bernstein:

Post Cards from Cambodia
excerpt from “The Last Post Card”
In the twilight glow of my final days in Cambodia,
a rush of sights, smells, and sounds tumble through
my memory. In my imagination the camera shutter
clicks, capturing pictures I did not take. Click— two
old yays with shaved heads, dressed in white blouses
with long sampots, walk home from a funeral hand-in-hand.
Click— a tiny frog leaps out of the grass, a long black
snake in pursuit. Click—four naked boys up to their

necks in muddy water, splash in their flooded front yard…

Tree Bernstein reads her poem, Ubi Sunt for the Dogs

Tree also has a photography show up in Ojai with a  reception Nov. 18th from 1-3 p.m. at the Ojai Art Center. The show runs through the end of November.

Upcoming featured readers at the library include:

November 30  Christopher Buckley
December 14   Michael C Ford
December 21   Scott Struman
December 28   Tim Tipton
January 11   Kevin Patrick Sullivan
January 18   Pierpont Poets
On Thursday December 7, my students and I will be there reading from our class publication. Hope to see you!

And here’s a little humor for you…
