Burning Man: From Axis Mundi to Spellbound

September 8, 2026

Time Adrian Landon

The world is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper. – W.B. Yeats

As residents of Black Rock City returned to their homes abroad, the Burning Man Organization announced the 2027 theme: Spellbound. Read more here.

“Spellbound” BM 27 theme

“There is a child in all of us that refuses to grow up, a child that is in awe of what can be, the polar opposite of the cynic in all of us who despairs over what is. Stories of magic, fantastic monsters, impossible courage and spectacular heroism appeal to this child, instilling it with hope and faith in humanity and in the cosmic order.”  – Shatrujeet Nath (Burning Man Journal Sept. 7, 2026)

In announcing the theme, organizer Stuart Magrum points out,

“Together, we will build a city from dust and dreams. Together, we will discover that the most powerful enchantments are not those imposed upon us, but those we choose to create with one another.”

Why wait? Build something now!

Today is the first day of classes for me as a teacher at Ventura College. A friend gave me a last minute ticket to Burning Man 2026— so I went even though it meant I spent a decent amount of time on my lap top preparing for my classes. But at least I made it there— and back to Ventura.

My lessons from Burning Man form a foundation of my classes. In fact, I teach them about the “10 Principles” and we discuss how to apply them in our classroom.

We watch and discuss “Oh the Places You’ll Go”

where do you want to go?

And we watch “Home”

BRC is HOME

where are we coming from? what feels like home? how can our classroom feel at home?

And we watch “Man on Fire”–

what sets you on fire? What gets you away from home?

and finally “Are you having an fun”?

because that is an important way to get thought his thing we call life!

More pictures and stories from BM 26 “Axis Mundi” soon!
