Interesting Facts About the Number 53 #13: 53 is the phone country code for Cuba

Want to call Cuba? And maybe make plans to visit now that the US and Cuba are talking again?

Four months ago President Obama of the US and President Raul Castro of Cuba announced efforts to restore diplomatic relations. Over 50 years ago, the US closed its embassy in Havana.

President Obama said that he is “not interested in having battles frankly that started before I was born” (in a front page article by Tracey  Lien and Paresh Dave in the Sunday April 12 2015 LA Times continued on A9).

This weekend’s Summit of the America’s in Panama City was the time and the place where they held an informal “pull aside.” They are hoping to resolve conflicts between the two countries.

So this week’s interesting fact about the number 53 just might help you out in connecting with Cuba: 53 is the country code you need to dial if you want to reach Cuba.

  • To call Cuba from USA or Canada dial : 01153 + phone number
  • To call Cuba from France or UK dial: 0053 + phone number
  • To call Cuba from Japon the dialing must start like this : 01053 + phone number
  • To call Cuba from China the dialing must start like this : 0053 + phone number

Thanks for sharing this Gwen. Since I’ve been working in Cuba for years, I’ve also been calling country code 53 from the US. It’s amazing how many times I’d have to try 10 years ago before getting through, when I could easily get through when calling from Mexico. Today, I normally get through on the first try. I hope the US finally eliminates its embargo and opens up the freedom of travel to Cuba for US citizens like every other country of the world. Open minded folks in the US will be amazed at how much “spin” they’ve put up with.
