Aristotle: We Become Builders By Building
We become builders by building, says Aristotle, just as harpists become harpists by playing the harp. “Similarly,” Aristotle says, “we become just by the practice of just actions, self-controlled by exercising self-control, and courageous by performing acts of courage.”
And we become writers by writing…
including writing that creates an argument, a point, a thesis…a road map for readers to follow and for us as writers to help us find our way as well.
In 2015, I wrote and read this script and my son (11 at the time) helped me create and edit this video. Now my son is a sophomore in college majoring in ski business and resort management, living at Lake Tahoe, and working at the NorthFace at Northstar. He still rock climbs as often as possible — at the gym right now because of all the snow– but it’s been awhile since he’s climbed this tree in our backyard. And of course, the cat is trying to be on my lap while I am trying to write.
The Four T’s that contribute to a strong thesis are:
- Topic
- ‘tude
- Telegraph
- Tension
Worth memorizing!
