I’m in the mood for love…

February 11, 2015

The profusion of hearts and the urging to spend money on chocolates, flowers, and jewelry may have tipped you off that this Saturday February 14 is Valentine’s Day.

If you’re in the mood for reading about love

in advance of this Valentine’s Day, check out these essays by college students who submitted these winning essays to the New York Times contest:

Modern Love has held this contest twice over the last seven years, and the response from thousands of students at hundreds of colleges and universities was overwhelming and eye opening.

A book of collected columns — “Modern Love: 50 True and Extraordinary Tales of Desire, Deceit and Devotion” — is available in paperback and e-book at online booksellers. The first time, in 2008, many students wrestled with their ambivalence over the no-strings-attached sex of hooking up, and by 2011 the focus had shifted to exploring how technology was changing how we meet, connect and love. What will be on students’ minds this year?

If you’re in the mood to do a little writing, and you’re a college student, you might want to write your own and submit it by March 15:

How to Enter: Email your essay (1,500 to 1,700 words, attached as a Word document AND pasted into the body of the email), along with your name, email address, phone number, college and year of graduation to: essaycontest@nytimes.com

Now if you’re in the mood for a little wine for Valentine’s and you’re in the Boston area, check out Boston Wine Expo.

For Southern Californians, head to the beach! Ventura County has another edition of Valentine n Wine from Thurs Feb.12 through Mon. Feb. 16:

February 12-16 Valentine’n Wine Passport Weekend features 11  wineries including Camarillo Custom Crush where you’ll probably be able to taste several wines by different wine makers using the facility.  More info and tickets here.

Tickets are $50 and good for five days of tasting giving you plenty of time to savor the experience of the central coast in Ventura County. In addition to whale watching and shopping at the outlet malls, downtown Ventura is fun to stroll around with lots of great restaurants, or walk from the end of the pier to the Cross through the Botanic Garden.

  • Very special one-of-a-kind pairings of food and chocolates at several different locations
  • Stay special at several local hotels – both one and two night pricing options for passport holders
  • Romantic gift ideas along the way

In the mood to make your Valentine MORE GREEN? Check out these ideas!
