Gary Vaynerchuk, Howard Stern, social media & Island Caretaker Job
Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV and social media guru calls out radio phenom Howard Stern in this video from fall 2008.
According to Gary, Howard Stern doesn’t want someone else to become an authority and doesn’t realize that the platforms have changed, but not the rules.
Using a clip of Howard Stern discussing new media like blogs, Facebook, and MySpace, Gary points out that “Howard Stern sounds like your dad, sounds like an old man.” Because of Stern’s vested financial interests in old media, he lives in old media, supports it, and disregards and disrespects new media. Stern is not positioned to leverage the social media platform, so he puts it down, hoping his listeners will follow his lead.
“Howard Stern lives in old media,” argues Gary, saying Stern “doens’t like it because no one’s talking about him any more.”
The time is past for Stern: “If you’re over the age of 15 you shouldn’t be on it,” Stern claims, referencing new media.
Why is Stern running scared? One reason is in new media there are no gatekeepers–and Stern got where he is by claiming his authority. That style doesn’t work any more.

So what does all this have to do with my race to win the Island Reef applicant job?
The successful candidate will be a champion of new media. This is a new media campaign which capitalizes on the world of web 2.0, and the people who live in it. The successful candidate will work with Tourism Queensland to utilize the tools of web 2.0–blogs, YouTube, websites, you name it, it will be part of the social media presence of this campaign of which the caretaker is an integral part.
Almost 35,000 people submitted videos for the position. Of these, how many have the multi-media skills plus the eco-know-how plus be photo and audio genic enough to pull this off?
Obviously, I think I can. Check it out for yourself by viewing my video here or here.
