Volunteer to remove debris from beaches, creeks, rivers, and lakes all around California to protect wildlife from harm while taking care of our environment. The mission of Ventura Countywide Coalition for Coastal & Inland Waterways is, “Promoting clean & healthy beaches, rivers and creeks throughout Ventura County”.
Last year in Ventura County, over 2,700 volunteers cleaned up 44 miles of beaches and inland waterways, removing 10,186 pounds of trash and recyclables! Statewide in 2016, more than 59,000 volunteers collected more than 710,781 pounds of debris. It was the largest California Cleanup – geographically- ever held, with more than 900 sites located in 54 California Counties.
Coastal Cleanup Dday is part of International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). In 2016 over 504,000 volunteers in 112 countries collected more than 18 million pounds of trash and covered enough miles of coastline to walk around the the moon twice. Over the last 30 years, more than 225 million items of trash have been logged and removed from out beaches and waterways.
Sat. Sept. 16: “Day of Caring” 9-noon
Volunteer opportunities at The United Way of Ventura County’s 28th annual Day of Caring includes beautifying the grounds at Prototypes Women’s Center of Ventura County in Oxnard, deep cleaning the Lighthouse for Women & Children in Oxnard and painting the gymnasium at the Boys & Girls Club of Moorpark. Volunteers are invited to the Day of Caring Kickoff Breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at California Lutheran University, 60 W. Olsen Road in Thousand Oaks. Sat. Sept. 30: “Make a Difference Day” Oxnard CA
On October 28th, volunteers from across the country will unite for Make A Difference Day, one of the largest annual single-days of service nationwide. Since 1992, volunteers and communities have come together on Make A Difference Day with a single purpose: to improve the lives of others.
BUT in Oxnard it happens this month! Family First and the Oxnard Downtown Management District are sponsoring Make a Difference Day on Sept. 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Plaza Park, 500 S. C St., in Oxnard. This event is designed to connect volunteers with community organizations all across Ventura County. About 25 charitable groups that need volunteers attended last year, including the Rescue Mission’s Lighthouse for Women and Children, Friends of Heritage Square and the Commission on Homelessness. It is nice to have some important days that we can do something on. We are able to help our environment, community, and people.
I would love to do a coastal clean up on my crutches, but I’ll be out of town exploring the wilderness of Yosemite. I promise to pick up any trash I see out there.
