Some people consider this year’s Burning Man theme of Cargo Cult too complicated (as expressed by none other than Hitler in this parody).

There are five main directions to go, in my opinion, in terms of thematic clothing. None of them include a Utilikilt! And they don’t depend on knowing how to solder el wire.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll share some creative clothing ideas (better not call them COSTUMES) but this post is dedicated to Retro-Futurist because as if she could see into the future, my Burner friend Sandra and her sweetie Vincent did a party last fall that celebrated the 50s take on the future–and when the Burning Man org announced the Cargo Cult theme, I immediately thought of the outfits that people326721_2560954119559_648116509_o wore, so here’s a few for your inspiration.

Many of these costumes (and yes, in my opinion we’re ALWAYS in costume), including the one that Sandra is wearing above, were created by the marvelous Burner, film, theatrical etc costumer Faabrika–pictured with Tim in matching in matching silver garb with Sandra in the middle.

If you’re in the LA are, you’re in luck because Faabrika is having a trunk sale where you can find fabulous furry concoctions and fabrics for fantastic fun this year on and off the playa.

Faabrika says she has custom made Stretchies, Furries, Wild Party Pants, faux fur coats, vests, hats, boot covers, and more… plus Porange! Dr Seussian garb, (only 6 striped hat sets left…) some tribally steampunky items…stockings, gloves, accessories, Fun whatnots and whozits…Silly leftovers like capes, gowns, choir robes…Fabrics, scraps, geegaws…From High end custom one of a kinds to low end potential who knows whats…Other times/days by appointment only. 310-597-3727  and she MAY be squeezin’ in a few more orders…

And of course you can always just wear a lot of sun screen. But please don’t be a shirtcocker. Also, if you’re going to ride a community “green” bike or share bikes in your camp, remember to wear something between you and the bike seat lest you bring something home that you didn’t bring with you–or give an unintended and unwanted gift.

Tang costume! And who remembers “Space Sticks”? (Pre-energy-bar vitamin-infused sweet sticks, in probably the first foil-lined packaging anyone had ever seen back in the 70s.)
