Burning Man 2013: Cargo Cult’s Bike Cult
Going to Burning Man this year? Have you got your bike in gear? Have you been riding it around –day and night? Got lights?
You may still have time to make yourself this Cargo Cult bike and bike trailer!
Honestly, I think you’d do better on the playa with rubber tires but hey, this bike’s got a lot of potential!
This year will be our first year in a long time that we won’t have our Burley trailer. At nine, our son doesn’t quite fit in it like he used to.
If we had more room, we’d bring it anyway.
Bike baskets and panniers are great of course–see for example, Maxwell’s.
Bike trailers are awesome for hauling all kinds of stuff around the playa–coolers, music, extra layers of clothes, you name it, it was great to have that trailer. In 2011, I hauled a case of wine plus 8 boxed wines from the Zoo all the way across the playa to Kidsville in a dust storm with my 7 year old in the trailer!
If you need a trailer for whatever reason at Burning Man or at home, this design would certainly be inexpensive and in keeping with the 2013 Burning Man Cargo Cult theme.
Need to learn how to build a bamboo bicycle trailer? Magnificent Revolution teaches workshops at their site in London or use these plans I found on their website to build a bamboo bike trailer on your own.
And as someone who hates hearing generators, check out this pedal powered one: Magnificent Revolution offers workshops to make your own people powered genie.
More about bikes including bike videos and photos from 2011 and 2012 in a post soon .
In the meantime, here’s a post with lots of great Burner bikes, and ideas on how to turn your bike into a playafly and how to fur your bike.
Here’s a post with lots of burner bikes.
Here’s a post about this bicycle with a bar (!!!!)
And here’s a post about the most amazing bike I ever rode on the playa–and that was then gifted to me.
So I hope this post has inspired you to get your bike in gear–and you too! You’ll be spending a lot of time in the seat so start now to prepare by doing some regular rides!

how about these Burning Man bicycles?
Great blog post! The first bike is something I would love to make when I am free. I’ve been to Burning Man several times now and it is a great experience. I know the website bewild.com had some burning man bike kits one year. They also have great rave gear for your glow needs.
