Curating Resistance: Punk as Archival Method
February 9 – 10, 2018 University of California, Los Angeles
plus a few other events like International Clash Day today!

That’s right, today is International Clash Day. And so today, I have a public service announcement with GUITARS.

For International Clash Day 2018, celebrate music as a tool for social consciousness — plus a band that did it so well along with over 100 RADIO STATIONS, events, and records stores around the world.

So what’s your favorite Clash song?

Or Clash cover?

Guess which one is one of mine? Yep, I’m a fan, and I love this cover of “Know Your Rights” … covered by Eddie Vedder which is a part of this blog post about blogging in college which my students do — and they can blog on any topic they choose, that they are interested in and passionate about.

Perfect timing for this weekend’s conference at UCLA on punk!

Hosted by the UCLA Center for Musical Humanities, “Curating Resistance: Punk as Archival Method” “focuses on the interstices of punk and archive, using both as method… [and] on documenting punk musicality, how sound repertoires and archival practices can give shape to the lived contours of diversity across scale, from the local to transnational, and what this means in terms of empowerment for research and endeavors that destabilize this colonial history of the academy.

Punk as archival method curates resistance by contributing to these larger conversations via the possibilities of musical subcultures’ collaborative systemic interruptions,” say organizers.

In other words: “Writing marginalized experiences into history through self documentation.”

In addition to two full days of conferences sessions, speakers, and panels, on Friday night February 9, there’s a concert from 7-10pm with Layla Bina, Sister Mantos, Mike Watt, and Alice Bag in the Ackerman Grand Ballroom but you need to RSVP ASAP as free tickets are limited for this all ages show!

The conference concludes on Saturday night with a Punk Prom from 6PM-8:30PM with DJ Juan38 from Razorcake and Zine Exchange plus Go Nightclubbing screening Greatest Hits in the Music Library Conference Room.

Again the conference and concert are Free,  but advance registration is required:

Check out the full Conference Program (PDF), updated 1/31/18. Visit the Conference Facebook page for updates.

SOMEWHAT RELATED: Opening tonight and running through Feb. 10 at 8pm and Feb. 11 at 2pm, The Colored Museum at Cal Lutheran University is directed by a Saundra McClain, a woman who appeared in the original 1986 production. Tickets are $10. Find the theater on campus (60 Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks) at 141 Memorial Parkway. For more information, call 805-493-3452.  The CLU Department of Theatre Arts and Dance  presents the play in celebration of Black History Month.

ALSO THIS WEEKEND at Bell Arts Factory, tell your story! Details here.

SOMEWHAT RELATED and also in Los Angeles at LACE on Mon. Feb 12: A brand new spoken-word monologue by Guillermo Gomez-Peña — The Most (un) Documented Mexican Artist (With cameos by Pocha Nostra members Balitronica & Saula): “In his latest solo work, El border brujo draws from Guillermo’s 30 year old living archive and combines new and classic performance material to present a unique perspective on the immediate future of the Americas. His-self styled “imaginary activism” invokes performance art as a form of radical democracy and citizenship.” Tickets and more info.

Any of these events would make great extra credit options for my students!

PS If you’re an Alice Bag fan and you live within driving distance of Ventura CA, you’ll be excited to know I got funding to bring Alice Bag to Ventura College to perform on Weds. April 11! Stay tuned to see if schedules will come together for a performance!!

Here’s video from Alice Bag’s 2016 album — she’s got another album coming out in 2018!
