Prepare for Burning Man 2017 Radical Ritual: 10 Principles Coloring Book!

August 10, 2017

The 2017  theme for Burning Man (That Thing In The Desert two hours north and east of Reno the week before Labor Day) “Radical Ritual”  invites participants to “occupy the ambiguous ground that lies between reverence and ridicule, faith and belief, the absurd and the stunningly sublime”… nothing new there!

Not to be confused with 2011’s “Rites of Passage,”  the theme of Radical Ritual “attempts to reinvent ritual in our post post-modern world.” Also nothing new there either.

“As one longtime participant wrote, ‘Burning Man employs ritual, but it is ritual removed from the context of theology. Unhindered by dogma, ritual becomes a vessel that can be filled with direct experience,” writes Lee Gilmore author of  Theater in a Crowded Fire: Ritual and Spirituality at Burning Man in “Fires of the Heart.”

I would go so far as to say that “Radical Ritual” is as much a part of Burning Man as the rituals involved in getting ready to go — both preparing packing all the things physically and mentally getting ready too.  Here are Ideas on how to prepare your bicycle for Burning Man– and better start riding it now so you are in saddle shape!

What is new is this new 10 Principles groovy coloring book!

To help people get ready mentally for Burning Man, especially for Birgins (people who are new to Burning Man), these days there are many guides. Guides are necessary because the event grew faster than the keepers of the Rituals.

Flat out: people didn’t know how to behave at Burning Man.

Hence the need and the development of the “10 Principles” which are as sacred to Burners as the 10 Commandments are to Christians. Just like God gave the 10 Commandments, Larry Harvey gave us the 10 Principles.

Read about the early days of Burning Man. Read about the need for the 10 Principles. Read about the 10 Principles.

This year to aid us with the 10 Principles, we have a COLORING BOOK with illustrations by Yhali Ilan and text by Larry Harvey. While there will be a short print run for on-playa distribution, here’s the file so you can print out your own booklet on legal paper. Print out a few extra copies and bring some extra crayons so you can share them with your neighbors while waiting in line at GATE! https://blackrockcity-education.pbworks.com/w/file/119462358/burning%20man%20coloring%20book.pdf

PS Am I going this year? Right now I don’t have a ticket or a vehicle pass… and while I have gone for 18 times since 1992, my last 8 burns have been with my son who is going into high school and stressed about missing classes. Plus, in the past, he was free and now he’s not. Should I go by myself? It’s tempting! We will see if a ticket and a vehicle pass come my way!
