#CRUDEAWAKENING
Are you still disturbed by the horrific oil spill a few months ago on the Santa Barbara coast? I am!
Did you know that last week, Plains All American, the operator of the ruptured pipeline increased its estimate of gallons spilled by 40% – now saying over 140,000 gallons total?
Did you know that while additional clean up off-shore isn’t possible, clean up on-shore continues, focusing on the tens of thousands of gallons that soaked into the soil and rocks of the bluffs and beach?
Did you know hundreds of birds and marine mammals have died as a direct result of oil exposure?
Did you know tar balls from the spill made their way hundreds of miles south– as far south as Redondo Beach?
Did you know YOU CAN DO SOMETHING? How close have you ever paddled to those enormous oil production platforms dotting our coastal horizon? How about a couple hundred feet away – in the name of oil spill prevention and response and stopping future offshore oil drilling? Or take action about current legislation?

CALLING EXPERIENCED PADDLERS/ KAYAKERS – SATURDAY ACTION/ PADDLE OUT AT HASKELL’S BEACH 7am
If you are an experienced paddler, you are invited to be part of a grassroots mission to help protect our coast from future oil spills. Patagonia and Surfrider are organizing a paddle-out from Haskell’s Beach in Goleta to Platform Holly early August 22nd. The purpose of the paddle is to raise awareness on four legislative bills that if passed would protect our oceans from future spills. Details on the bills below.
Join Surfrider, SB Channelkeeper, EDC and other local activists in a paddle-out event 2.5 miles from Haskell’s Beach in Goleta to Platform Holly where paddlers, kayakers, and outriggers will assemble in front of Platform Holly to display a floating banner that reads: “#CRUDEAWAKENING.” Photos and video assets from this action to be used on social media/ online/ etc.
Vetted by the Coast Guard, the event will include two support boats on hand for safety. If you are an experienced paddler and want to attend, or you’d like more information RSVP to John Phaneuf, john@johnphaneufDOTcom; 805-509-4103
Direction to Haskell’s: 101 N, exit Winchester Canyon. Continue straight onto Calle Real, then turn left onto Cathedral Oaks Rd. After crossing over US 101, turn right onto Hollister Ave, follow road past the Sandpiper Golf Course (first left turn pocket) and the Oil Processing Facility (second left turn pocket). There’s a paved public access beach parking lot on the left (third left turn pocket), adjacent to the Bacara Resort’s tennis courts. Park here; a public walkway leads to the beach from the parking lot. There are public restrooms available at the pavilion on the beach. A Bacara’s road for loading and unloading may be open.
The rally for this event will take place on the water. However, if you are not an experienced paddler, you can still get involved using social media and the hashtag #CRUDEAWAKENING.
You can also support these bills and get your friends to support them and use social media with the hashtag #CRUDEAWAKENING to raise awareness.
TAKE ACTION – CRITICAL BILLS TO STOP NEW OIL SPILLS NEED OUR HELP
Four bills need to pass out of the legislature by September:

Senate Bill 414 Would improve oil spill response off our coast.
Assembly Bill 864 Would require oil companies to use “best available techonology” on their pipelines.
Senate Bill 295 Would improve requirements for pipline inspection
