Burning Man: How to Perform & Volunteer in Center Camp & for BRCPO 2.0

June 27, 2009

2008_8_25_BurningMan_3_182 by Ian LauderThis afternoon at 4pm at Dockweiler Beach, LA regional Burners will gather to BBQ Newbies; I think a similar activity is going on in SF this weekend as well. Folks are gearing up and getting ready for the BIG EVENT in the desert which happens the week before Labor Day; to see more pictures by Ian Lauder like the one here, check out his on-line gallery of BM08 shots, including 360 degree shots of center camp.  Check it out:

Speaking of CENTER CAMP: What to do when you get out there? PARTICIPATE! Not spectate. There are a myriad ways that people do so; here’s a few ways to get on stage in Center Camp, how to volunteer to help keep the events there going, and how to go postal at BRC PO 2.0, thanks to the fine folks at Jack Rabbit Speaks.

According to Sleepless, Queen of the Cafe Performance Stages:

“The Cafe is a venue that bursts with a universe of art and unusual creative expression.

A musical stage features participants playing conversation-friendly world and instrumental music during the day; and at night hosts an incredible range of exciting performance — from classical dance to rock, opera to marching bands and funk to psychedelic. A spoken word stage features poetry readings, soap-box rants, comedy, slam poetry and theatrical productions.

1) Are you a live music performer performing original music (no covers please), magician, juggler, comedian, aerialist, MC or performance artist in search of a stage? Well, we have one to offer, and spots are going fast!

We have fabulous volunteers to help schedule your performances.

a. For your spoken word/comedy/storytelling/soap-box stylings:

b. For musical performances:

c. For aerial performances: (scheduled from 5:30pm-6pm daily)

d. For MCing: (scheduled from 5pm-1am daily in 2-4 hour shifts)

e. For all other types of performances:

2) Are you an expert on a subject and want to share your BRAIN? (braaaains …)

We will be featuring the Speaker Series, Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30am-12:30pm . Full hour and half hour slots available. Special priority given to subjects relating to this year’s Evolution theme or to subjects of particular interest to a broad spectrum of Burning Man participants. If interested, contact

Note that these talks should be educational without endorsing a product or specific group. Whether you speak or not, stop by and eat, I mean, FEED your BRAIN!

Note: We are unable to accommodate fire performances in the Café and all music must be original. Any recorded music used in aerial or stage acts should be license free/performed live.”

Sleepless is the queen of the Center Camp Stages, and she’s looking for help with them thar stages once again this year.  This is a great place to volunteer!  Says she:

“Stage Managers
Do you like herding cats? Do you like people (most of the time)? Are you punctual and detail oriented?  If you answered yes to the above questions, Come and stage manage with us. Work closely with amazing artists and performers of all stripes, plaids and dots!

Gear Gods
Do you like working with and around musicians? Do you have a basic knowledge of sound equipment? Do you know how to plug a mic into a snake is? Can you lift 50 lbs? Do you like to have knowledge other people don’t? If you answered yes to even two of those questions, you should totally email: to volunteer as a Rockstar – I mean, GEAR GOD!

Sound Techs
Come volunteer and geek out on trying to tech the most unusual bands and musicians you are likely to see merge in one place!  Center Camp Café Sound and Performance Team is looking for Sound Technicians to volunteer, walk around with pin-like focus and speak in technical terms that no one can understand (minus possibly the stage managers and other technicians) Experience required!!!!

Shifts are 4 hours long with typically six to ten acts per shift.  Doing production work on the playa is super fun.  The acts range from incredibly talented to the wackiest most insane thing you will ever see … even the bad stuff is usually pretty funny!”

Like mail?  Who doesn’t?  Blue, from the BRCPO 2.0 writes in seeking assistance for their noble cause of mail delivery to and from Black Rock City (for reals):

“Last year was the first year for the BRCPO 2.0, which fueled both the Tokyo Post Office at 9 o’clock plaza and the testing of the groundbreaking Telegram-To-Playa Art program (allowing default-world situated loved-ones to send and receive short messages transformed to art to and from their favorite Burning Man participant — possibly within hours). This year we want to continue providing these great services to the BRC community, but we need your help — in a few ways:

1. Design the cancellation stamp that will adorn (and officially cancel) mail leaving the Tokyo Post Office at 9 o’clock plaza for the default world! Preference may be given to BM09 theme-oriented designs and/or designs that depict soup (SOUP!). Please send black & white (no color or greyscale) designs to by midnight Pacific Time, July 3rd, 2009.

2. Become a Post Office supporter. $25 makes you an official supporter and gets you the awesomest T-shirt ever. We can’t stress enough how awesome these shirts are — that’s an objective opinion. And it’s quite likely wearing the shirt on playa will cause you to receive preferential treatment from posties and non-posties alike. Write Blue at for details.

3. The BRCPO 2.0 is looking for: a) on-site performance artist volunteers to deliver mail and staff windows (Not sure if it’s right for you? Send a blank email to to enroll in our correspondence course) and b) an artist with DMV-approved art car that can act as mail transport on playa (only day driving needed).
