Matt Mullenweg’s State of the Word: WordPress 2009–open source rules!

May 30, 2009

wordpress-tattoo Ed Morita of Bakers Hour blogEd Morita of Baker’s Hours tattoo celebrates WordPress.

Speaking of celebrations, Matt Mullenweg started WordPress at 19; WordPress celebrates its 6th Birthday tonight. Which makes Matt 25 years old. Amazing. He was born in 1984.

WordPress was conceived and delivered via a blog post and a comment. Matt wrote a post about what he’d like to see in a blogging platform using features from the various ones available at the time. Someone commented, saying let’s work on this, and away they went! Most of the people building WordPress worked virtually and didn’t meet and shake hands until after years of projects together. The WordPress community was born. A flexible platform for users to adapt to their needs.

WordPress’s stats have all doubled or tripled in the last year. For example: 22 billion pages views this year; up from 8 billion last year.

whew!! so much so fast! hard to keep up and be in 3 places at one time (listening, blogging and tweeting!)! Matt’s still big on BuddyPress (it’s about community, baby! open to everyone!) and there’s gonna be more themes and there’s lots of plugins on the way…

WordPress 2.8 is coming…2.7 is now 6 months old! New widget system coming. New theme browser–impressive. Really. Impressive. The new 2.8 is not going to be hugely different than 2.7…but watch out for 3.0.

More iPhone goodness plus a WordPress ap for Blackberry–that got some cheers!

WPMU and are merging.

WordPress Rangers –like the Black Rock Rangers at Burning Man…holy cow. Where to even start commenting on this one–Matt even admits that he’s never been and probably never will… Let’s just say he’s a bit naive but hey, it should work.

Who’s Matt? Here’s a little more about Mr> WordPress:

What an inspiring story. A post, a comment, the whole is more than the sum of its planets combined with a genuine desire to add value to the lives of the people around you and whoosh.. zero to 22 billion in the blink of an eye. Thanks Matt, WordPress changed my life, literally.
