January 15, 2015
Nominations for the Academy Awards were announced this morning, and several of the biopic or true life adaptations that Ron Wells reviewed in the past week or so were nominated. Among the nominations, for best picture, lead actor, best adaption, and best musical score, both  The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything made the list with Imitation Game getting 8 total nominations and The Theory of Everything with 4.

Foxcatcher, reviewed and with trailer below below, earned five nods: lead actor Steve Carrell, Mark Ruffalo for his supporting role, Bennett Miller for direction, Bill Corso and Dennis Liddiard for make-up and hair, and E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman for best original screenplay.
In Foxcatcher, outstanding acting by Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo lift this deadly true life story of psychopathic billionaire John du Pont and his relationships with, and manipulation of, America’s two best Olympic wrestlers, brothers Mark Schultz and David Schultz.Directed by Bennett Miller (Moneyball), the film sets up all the reasons that the main characters are the way they are (the brothers were orphaned at the age of two), as well as how du Pont tries to impress his mother (played by Vanessa Redgrave) by coaching a sport she loathes, while she appears to care for her horses more than she does her son. Words cannot begin to express the cold, psychotic portrayal of Carell’s du Pont, the loneliness and neediness of Tatum’s Mark Schultz, nor the love and concern of Ruffalo’s David Schultz. A cold, sad and deeply troubling expose of intertwined lives that never should have met to begin with.
