Portable Fire Pit Perfect for Burning Man, Backyard or Camping Trips

As someone who does a lot of camping year round and who generally avoids campgrounds when possible, I was thrilled to discover this portable firepit called a Firefly.

Back in the day, you could build a fire anywhere and no one cared. I mean, there’s nothing like sitting around a campfire with friends and family, roasting marshmallows and telling stories.

To build a fire, when you went camping, you just circled up some rocks, threw in the wood that you found laying around, lit a match or 10, and let it roar.

At Burning Man, folks just burned stuff, all kinds of stuff, where ever they wanted.

Sofas, plastic coated trash, bottles, cans, chairs–you name it, people burned it without thinking about it.

I remember in the mid-90s roaming around and it was like a campground with everyone huddled around their own fires. It was fun to wander from fire to fire joining in the party. Unfortunately, lots of folks left sofas and other junk smoking on the playa and there were some accidents where camps went up in flames and there were injuries.

Well, if you do that now, you injure the earth and you will likely damage yourself and your friends.

In a campfire ring, rocks get fire scars. They will likely never look the same again. At Burning Man, the dry lake bed or playa also gets scarred when someone burns stuff directly on it.

Nowadays there are burn barrels in many camps or burn platforms on the playa. It’s a good way to get rid of your paper plates and other paper trash because there are no trash cans at Burning Man–if you pack it in you gotta pack it out!

PS Just to be clear: I’m not advocating that you build big random fires at every camp at Burning Man, even if the theme this year is Cargo Cult and even if you have one of these groovy do-dads.
