RIP Michele Serros: El Rio’s Chicana Falsa

January 6, 2015
    51NCZ5J8VWL “Annie Says”
by Michele Serros (1966-2015)

From Chicana Falsa and other stories of Death, Identity and Oxnard (1994)

My tía, Annie, told me:
“You could never be a writer,
let alone a poet.
What do your know?
I mean, what can you write about?

“You got a D on your last book report
you gotta be able to write English good,
use big words…
and you’ve never even been out of Oxnard.
Writers travel
all the time
New York, Paris, Rome…
Every place they make Oil of Olay.
That’s where writers go,
that’s where they live.
Your family doesn’t have money to travel.
You never will.
And you don’t even type.
Now, how you gonna be a writer?
Sure, some famous poets,
they say
wrote longhand
but that was some years ago,
and they were men.
Men have it easy,
worthless lazy dogs.
But you wouldn’t know about that
’cause you’ve never been with one.
You’ve never
ate,
slept,
inhaled,
pure passionate love.
Writers are always in love,
like this Harlequin romance I’m reading.
Now, how are you gonna be a writer?
You don’t even like boys yet.
You’ve never given your heart to a boy,
so he could take it,
hold it,
clench it,
wring it dry,
to toss away,
forgotten in the gutter.

“They make you cry,
hurt,
suffer.
Writers know stuff like that,
they heal their pain with words.
You don’t know about pain,
anguish,
outrage,
protest.
Look on TV…
The Brown Berets,
they’re marching.
The whole Chicano movement
passing you by and
you don’t even know about that.
You weren’t born in no barrio.
No tortillería down your street.
Bullets never whizzed
past your baby head.

“Chicana Without A Cause.

“No, mi’ja,
Nobody will ever buy your books,
so put your pencil down
and change the channel for me,
it’s time for ‘As the World Turns'”
I was very sad to learn yesterday that author, performance artist, and spoken word poet Michele Serros died Sunday January 4, 2015 at the premature age of 48 of a rare cancer. Michele Serros left behind a wealth of stories to mark her life here in Ventura County and beyond. I taught her work often and my students loved knowing that she came from HERE. Born in 1966 and raised in El Rio near the town of Oxnard in Ventura County, Michele studied journalism at Ventura College. She continued her studies in writing at Santa Monica College where she was a student when her book Chicana Falsa was published in the mid-90s. Her follow up, How To Be A Chicana Role Model, led to her getting a job on the George Lopez show and many other opportunities as a writer, including fulfilling her dream of living and writing in NYC. Read Lisa McKinnon’s obituary of Michele Serros in the Ventura County Star here.
Michele never forgot her Ventura County roots and returned often to read. I will never forget the first time I heard her read upstairs above the Ventura Bookstore in the Oddfellows Hall in the early 90s; I think gauvin opened for her. She was outrageous–and she inspired me to push my writing, my poetry, and my performance further and to be fearless.
In the late 90s, she was a featured workshop leader and reader at a Ventura College event for area high school students that I helped organize, and she read at Ventura College as recently as March 2014 and this fall she was involved with the Cuento Cups exhibition at the Ventura County Museum. The show countered the Chipolte campaign of putting short stories on cups but that neglected to include an Chicano or Latino authors. I often used her book as a book club choice in my college classes.
In an email blast, poet and poetry host Phil Taggart said that he had been thinking about how much Serros meant to us in Ventura County, Oxnard, and El Rio:

“Michele was an incredible humorous, and
insightful lens into our community.”

For someone who was such a wonderful reader and performer, I am surprised that I couldn’t find any videos or even audio of Michele Serros reading (if you know of some please leave the link in the comments below!). However, here are some videos with interviews with Michele Serros:

2015: Get on the Good Foot

January 5, 2015

Hello 2015! It’s time to “Get on the Good Foot”!

How? Start this video from the first season of Soul Train back in 1972 and get moving and grooving to James Brown’s funk classic “Get on the Good Foot” –his first to go gold.

1510871_10152440148100924_2187829704039238759_nThat’s what I did this morning when Jason Bentley played “Get on the Good Foot” on KCRW following an NPR piece on James Brown’s drummers, Clyde Stubblefield and John “Jabo” Starks who created the distinctive funk drumming on many of James Brown‘s biggest hits.  John “Jabo” Starks is credited with drumming on “Good Foot” — a two-part single that charted #1 R&B and #18 Pop and appeared on the album of the same name; Billboard ranked it as the No. 99 song for 1972.

Not motivated yet? Get inspired by James Brown’s amazing moves when he performed “Get on the Good Foot” live on Soul Train:

Coming up: movie reviews by Ron Wells of Wild (based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir of hiking 1100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail –and which I hiked all of), The Imitation Game, Mr Turner, The Theory of Everything, and Foxcatcher plus some cool astronomy news, a few thoughts on the untimely death of author Michele Serros, and how to participate in a twitter event.

Yes, after a holiday hiatus, I’m back to blogging!

Happy New Year!

Support AP’s Winter Solstice Salutes to Welcome Back Sun, Help Temple

December 19, 2014

139_to_walk_on_earth“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle,” says Vietnamese Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh.

“But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth, ” Thich Nhat Hanh says.

“Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don’t even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child…our own two eyes,” he continues.

winter_solstice by Danilo Pivato from NASA's APOD“All is a miracle,” Thich Nhat Hanh concludes.

One particular miracle stands out however and that occurs each year on the day that the nights begin to get shorter again: the day of the winter equinox.

As mentioned in an earlier blog post, equinox celebrations occur around the world each year, with one tomorrow afternoon and evening at Art City in Ventura and another in LA in the evening. Both of these are organized by people who go to Burning Man, and I will be hosting a special ritual in Ventura. Details here.

Another way to hail the sun’s return is by doing a series of yoga asanas called Sun Salutes. The auspicious and traditional number to complete is 108. While you can complete your sun salutes anywhere, it is easier and more meaningful to do them with others.

Tomorrow at 8am, you are invited to join me as Sally McNally leads us in 108 sun salutes at the Ventura Buddhist Temple.

Our  joyous celebration of the sun’s return is also a fundraiser for the Temple which is in dire need of a new roof (estimated to cost $33,000). The Temple is in a lovely historic church with stained glass windows and a peaceful beautiful garden on Saticoy Avenue between Darling and Telephone Road.

I will donate $1 for each sun salute ($108) to the Temple whether I complete my sun salutes or not, but perhaps you would consider sponsoring me? A dollar per sun salute would be great ($108) but even one or two dimes a salute would help motivate me and provide needed support for the Temple ($10.80 or $21.60 if I complete all 108).

I would like to raise another $108 which means I am looking for 10 sponsors at $10.80 or 5 at $21.60 or some combination. The Temple and the garden there is one of my favorite places in Ventura. I attend yoga there most Fridays from 8:15am-9:30 am and sometimes Saturdays too form 8-9:15am. In addition to Buddhist services in three languages and two yoga classes, classes in meditation and tai chi and zen buddhism are also offered regularly. Find the Temple’s calendar of events and classes here.

Following yoga from 8am-930am is a study group on The Dhammapada, a collection of sayings of the Buddha in verse form and one of the most widely read and best known Buddhist scriptures. The  group meets monthly and generally discuss a single verse for about an hour and meditates for 30 minutes. That evening from 7-8pm is chanting of Namo Amitabha (Nam Mo A Di Da Phat) by candlelight. All are welcomed and due to the ongoing nature of the verses one can does not need to have started at the beginning to immediately begin appreciating this marvelous work.

On Sunday, the Temple is hosting a fundraiser: come enjoy a by donation vegetarian Vietnamese lunch from noon-3pm following the regular Vietnamese Buddhist Service at 10am.

Please help me help the Temple. You can sponsor me with ANY AMOUNT by commenting below or just by encouraging me with likes and comments! Please send your TAX DEDUCTIBLE checks directly to the Temple 901 S. Saticoy, Ventura CA, 93004. Every cent will go to the new roof to shelter all of the wonderful FREE community activities that take place there every day. Thank you!

Curious about what this winter solstice and New Moon has in store astrologically? Check out Mystic Mama’s post where she curates several different forecasts for this Capricorn new moon on the eve of Solstice Sunday 12/21!

For example, from KELLEY ROSANO, she quotes:You are at the beginning of something new in your life… Take action now! Capricorn is the goat climbing to the mountain top. The mountain is your mighty I Am Presence. The I Am Presence does not descend into the lower physical world where ego reigns. You are to climb higher and merge with your God Consciousness.…The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Pluto, Vesta and Venus are in Capricorn at the New Moon. We have a whole lot of Capricorn going on. The New Moon is encouraging you to take charge of your life. You are setting the foundation for the next twelve months. Be practical and patient. You are to persevere in your personal and professional goals…”

CATHY PAGANO from her Wisdom of Astrology concurs: “This is a perfect time to imagine and create a new cosmic story that can shape our awareness of the possibilities before us.   So begin your new story.  It’s time.  The Cosmos is waiting….” She continues that: “This is a great time to take your ART out into the world.  Change things through creative action rather than violent action.  And whatever those breakthroughs and breakdowns, be creative with your response!”

Mystic Mama also quotes ROBERT WILKINSON from his Aquarius Papers who writes: “Over the next 4 weeks, the New Moon in Capricorn introduces us to a time of accepting a form of power or authority wherever we have Capricorn in our charts… This New Moon in Capricorn will help us in seeing how to manage different types and areas of pressure! This New Moon falls just after the Solstice, so of course most of the aspects are identical! That implies that whatever the next 4 weeks are about will profoundly affect the next 3 months! …The Capricorn seed indicated by this New Moon helps us forge a sense of personal power and effectiveness on our terms.” He concludes that “With so many planets in early Capricorn, use this time to anchor the power of the emotional intelligence and stability you’ve cultivated since Summer 2013.”

The detail of the silk thangka above is from Saraswati by Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo, one of a few westerners trained in the rare Buddhist art of silk applique thangkas, part of the Tibetan cultural tradition. His Holiness the Dalai Lama gave his blessings to Leslie’s work and encouraged her to make images that speak to the spiritual aspirations of people across religions and cultures. Leslie’s fascinating story is the subject of the acclaimed documentary film, Creating Buddhas: the Making and Meaning of Fabric Thangkas.  Her Weekly Wake-ups like this one provide a thread of inspiration each week.

Zhena Muzyka Presents “Life By The Cup”

December 7, 2014

zhena-header-about  “Life by the Cup is a true story that stretches from single motherhood and hard times through unique personal success. Pour a cup of tea, open to the first page and find a friend who will teach you: Your hopes are a form of planning.” — Gloria Steinem

On Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 12:30, author ZHENA MUZYKA aka @MistressofTea and  will discuss and zhena-1-booksign her 2014 memoir and highly acclaimed self-help book Life by the Cup (Simon and Schuster) at Ventura College H. P. Wright Event Center on Day Road near Telegraph. We’ll be sure to have a seat for you if you join the Facebook Event Page here.
According to her website (and I would agree), “Life by the Cup is the inspiring story of Zhena’s journey as founder of a company that benefits health, protects the environment, and supports humanitarian efforts. Each chapter shares a life lesson that will inspire you wherever you are in life. Her message: Be audacious in your dreams, commit to your values, and see your passion transformed into possibility.”
An internationally well-known socially responsible business leader, ZhenaMuzyka founded Zhena’s Gypsy Tea in 2000; her teas areavailableforpurchase in 20,000 stores nationwide.Celebrated for her work in sustainable business practices,Zhena’s honors and awards include Enterprising Women of the Year Award and the Socially Responsible Business Award;sheandherproductshave been featured in Marie Claire, Inc., Good Housekeeping, O, the Oprah Magazine, and appeared on Fox, Bloomberg, Good Morning America and the Today Show.

Zhena’s website states that “As an advisor, author and motivational speaker, Zhena Muzyka turned her passion for tea, belief in herself, and love for life into a successful career helping women realize their dreams of business ownership. Drawing from the depths of her experiences in turning her background in aromatherapy and talent for blending tea into the multi-million dollar Zhena’s Gypsy Tea®, Zhena inspires her audiences with energetic messages about entrepreneurial spirit, empowerment, and social and environmental responsibility.

zhena-2

Zhena embraced her rich Ukrainian Gypsy ancestry, relying on the teachings of her Gypsy grandmother to help her alter fate as she sold tins of her custom tea blends from a small cart on California street corners when her infant son needed a life-saving kidney operation.”

How do you “show up” to your ambitions? Most of us have this fantasy in our minds of this great ambition that is so far out of our line of vision that it might as well be a fairy tale. Nobody really has a path there, and if they do, it probably won’t work for you. If we try to be a part of some 12-step program that leads us to our far far away dreams, we will probably relapse at some point and then forget we were ever a part of a program. Zhena Muzyka tells the story of her dreams and how she fought to achieve them against all odds in her book Life by the Cup.

Opportunity knocks for everyone. We just have to show up, as Muzyka writes.

“By showing up you are taking an action, and actions are what bring results, whether or not you are competent yet in something. A thousand ideas come and go in our minds, but the ones we actually make a move toward are the ones that pay off, even if we don’t know exactly how to get it done,” Muzyka teaches us (36).
