More Stunning Stuff: Where are Blogs Going?
I found these quotes on Technorati’s 2008 Report and since I thought others would be interested too, I share them here:
The Blogosphere is Continuing to Evolve
Technorati asked some of the leading minds on the Blogosphere to give their thoughts on where blogging is headed:
“In 2004 when Technorati started, the typical reaction to the word ‘blog’ was ‘huh – can you repeat yourself?’ Today, blogs are everywhere —even presidential candidates have blogs. The blog has forever changed the way publishing works —now anyone can be a publisher. The issue is no longer distribution; rather, it’s relevance.”

“The idea of blogging will never disappear, but the process by content is created for one blog or a series of blogs will continue to undergo radical upheavals. This past year, we saw the introduction of countless “microblogging” platforms, to the point where they (themselves) have become a commodity —further pushing individual voices to the Blogosphere’s melting pot. Brand will continue to decentralize, and micro-communities will form within any one of the loosely-structured services (like FriendFeed, which values the continuation of conversation as much as it does the initiation portion).”
“Video will also become increasingly important to convey complex messages that are often lost in text – while audio will continue to fall away to this new medium, save those ‘casts with high production values. YouTube will continue to be the place where most people will view their on-demand Internet video. Live video events will soon saturate the landscape, and our attention will become even further fragmented —lending more credibility for the need to archive and index certain video clips and wrap them with text for Google and other search engines to discover.”

“I blog in Spanish and English for different reasons. In English I blog to communicate my ideas and views, in Spanish, where for some unknown reason many more people comment, I write to learn. The collective intelligence of my commentators is greater than mine.”

“Blogs will fill every niche in the ecology of public writing. They’ll be good examples of blogs and a far larger range of sites that are sort-of, kind-of blogs. This is as it should be. It’s also as it already is.”

3:15 Experiment Poem August 29, 2006: no there is not
Blank my mind draws
no conclusions of
something to write
no ? no titles no
teasing images
no engaging device
no tricky line or divine
instead the great
yawning blankness
urges slackness,
retirement
sleep.
There is always tomorrow
the thinking goes. But
really there is not

Some Stunning Statistics about the State of Blogsville
Sometimes it’s good to get some perspective. So here’s Some Stunning Statistics about the State of Blogsville. For most sources go here or hover and you’ll see the links:

Santa Baby: Let It Snow!
That’s right, it’s snowing at Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert and all over the poetry and everything else on my blog, thanks to the Automatticians at WordPress! If you’re on WordPress, here’s how to get snow on your own blog!
Eartha Kitt and her friends (!) can have all that stuff! The snow is great and making me happy! (OK, maybe an iPhone would be nice…and okay, I’ll take an aquamarine surrounded by brown diamonds if you insist…)
Happy Holidays from sunny, warm coastal southern California!
(PS Let me know if the snow overly taxes your machinery–I heard last year some people complained that it caused slowdowns on some blogs but I never noticed a problem…)
Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse Santa Barbara: better than home?
If the Big Monkey had a blog, it would be called Beer, BBQ & Bruce (that would be Springsteen).
But he’s too busy barbecuing for a blog.
While I tend to stick my nose in a collection of poetry and browse around, he’s likely to daydream his palate away in a cookbook.
We BBQ’d a ham for Thanksgiving last week, and I salivate just thinking about the duck eh made a few months ago. He cooks salmon perfectly, and the fine art of cooking a steak comes out just right every time. Two weeks ago, we were both ecstatic over some filet mignons which we enjoyed with a bottle of Teusner Barossa Valley Shiraz.
That night, we both agreed as we usually do, that we just couldn’t get a meal like this out that was as good as home. After all, how could you improve on perfection?
Turns out, you can. At least in the steak department.
Last night, with the Big Monkey at one end of the table and his boss at the other, celebrating the best month of sales they’d ever had, the Big Monkey proclaimed that the porterhouse steak here at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse was not only better than any steak he’d ever had in a restaurant, but the best steak he’d ever had. Period. And that it was worth every cent.
Now that’s saying a mouthful.
However, if we’d been dining at home, we wouldn’t have sat around for ages with no wine in our glasses. And we would have had the wine we’d ordered with the various courses we’d intended to drink them with.
That part was ridiculous. For a restaurant as expensive as this one, Read more…
poem: bee butterfly
through the kitchen window
an insect flies into a wine bottle
now a monarch chrysalis
attaches to the side
no no little one
you don’t understand
the wine fumes
may hurt you
you will be trapped inside
like a fine masted ship
gentle i shake you out will
put you careful someplace safe
in my hand you buzz
you are now a bee
anger stinger poised
flick you go out the window
i really wanted
to keep you in that bottle

Celestial Smiles

We walked out the Ventura Pier, one of the longest on the west coast, all the way out into the sea to the end, to have an unobscured view of the evening sky and to take in the breathtaking view of the crescent moon, Venus, and Jupiter.
The boy showed us his new skipping step, and marveled at being able to walk on water. At 5, most everything is a miracle and he was joyous to be walking with us on the pier, stopping periodically to check on a chunk of seaweed and throw it over the side, to see what the fishermen were doing, to watch the light on the waves, to grab our hands. It occurred to me to bring a camera and blog to record the scene but I didn’t. I might try tomorrow.
Before we headed home, we stopped at Eric Ericson’s Fish House perched on the pier. They had Fat Tire draft for $2; I had a martini for $5. We watched the celestial dance for a while, at times faded by clouds, then headed home where we could watch the progression for awhile through the southern window.
I never did see this smile; Jane at http://herestolife.wordpress.com did and she posted about it.

3:15 Experiment Poem: August 5, 2001–rethink
being on the road
you get disoriented
sometimes you awake
you don’t know where you’re from
you don’t know who you are
or who you’re supposed to be
maybe that’s ok
to rethink these things
decide whether someone is supposed
to be beside you or not
Yep, another “old” 3:15 experiment poem for this week’s Poetry Train. I was going through 2001 a few weeks ago and uncovered this week’s poem and last week’s and decided to roust them out of retirement and post them. It also seems unusually timely given the recent debate and controversy on this blog and on gingaTao’s with regards to gingaTao’s Seal of Approval, badges, monetization, and who is worthy of being an arbiter of taste.
You can find more links to other poets and lots of prompts at Read Write Poem.
And remember to look at the sky at sunset tonight and tomorrow night to see the crescent moon, Venus and Jupiter shining brightly! Or as I call it, a trio of treats to be grateful for!
