Burning Man tix going fast! Low-income & scholarship apps due May 30 And why would you apply? check out the links to these cool art installations that will be out on the Playa for Burning Man 2009!

2009 HONORARIUM INSTALLATIONS

Every year Burning Man allocates a percentage of its revenue from
ticket sales to funding select art projects that are collaborative,
community-oriented and interactive.  We do this in order to support
the Burning Man art community, and to facilitate the creation of
outstanding art for Black Rock City.  The vast majority of art
installations on the playa, however, are not funded. In 2009, a
percentage of your hard-earned ticket money helped to fund the
following art installations, for all Burning Man participants to enjoy.

Carbon Garden is a garden of flowers made out of carbon fiber (the
same stuff as the stealth bomber, Boeing’s most advanced airplane
wings, and possibly your bicycle fork if you’re extra cool).  Each
flower will have a small flame that can change its size up to 30 times
per second from a candle size to about 3 feet. Flowers react to people
around them with ultrasonic range finders, and “talk” to each other in
a language of fire. Read more…

Straws Suck: Just say no straw please

May 21, 2009

n65358216643_5863 monkey drinks through strawsIt’s going to be hard to break the news to my little monkey but it’s time to just say no to plastic straws because Plastic Straws are For Suckers!

My friend Marialyce Pedersen invited me to join a facebook group which asks:

What would happen if everyone who ordered a drink politely added “And no plastic straw, please!” ?

What would happen is this…

That straw, that was unwrapped from a paper wrapper and unboxed from a box, unloaded from a truck that drove from the docks where a ship had carried it from faraway lands or a railcar had chugged through the once pristine sands of the Gulf Coast-Home of the US Petrochemical Industry and the petrochemical-contaminated fisheries and the cancers that carry misery on the waters of the once great Gulf Coast-

That straw, that was made from gas Read more…

Ugg, Simple, Teva Outlet sale & more summer great gear deals galore!

May 20, 2009

new & old Uggs Simple teva kids shoes by Art PredatorMany people know that Ventura is home to Patagonia. Not because we’re a big industrial city but because there’s great surf, climbing and fly fishing in the Sespe, hot springs, and mild weather.  People can and do climb or snow ski in the morning and surf in the afternoon. You can get to Yosemite or San Francisco in 6-7 hours and LAX or Pine Mountain in 90 minutes. We grow some awesome grapes and make delicious wine around here too!

Because of Patagonia (and the other amenities!), Ventura is also home to a number of related outdoor sports companies. While Grammicci just moved away, Ojai and others are still here, and Real Cheap Sports outlet is open almost every day of the year; they carry Patagonia and other labels and can outfit you for any outdoor sport you enjoy at better prices than you might think!

Maybe my favorite outlet is Deckers, makers, distributors and importers of shoes like Uggs, Teva, and Simple. Read more…

New Coldplay Free Download + Muppet sings AP’s Fav Coldplay song “Yellow”

May 20, 2009

I love this song (and this version is AMAZING!!)

The first time I heard “Yellow” I was driving through town on Main Street. Coldplay was a guest on KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic. As I was waiting for the light to go green so I could turn left on Seaward,  I was so moved I started crying. I still see that moment, can still see the street, the shock of how moved I was. Soon home, I sat in the car and listened with tears pouring down my face.  It was so raw, so real. I have been a fan of Coldplay ever since.

The other day I learned from @daltukhov that Coldplay is offering a special album for FREE download. So I zipped over there and was rewarded! Check it out NOW & enjoy!

ArtPredator: RT @daltukhov: Coldplay download went smooth for me! :) http://www.coldplay.com/lrlrl/lr.html & 4 Art Predator also!

Yep, I gotta say this is a GREAT WAY to CELEBRATE my 600 post on this blog since I started Nov. 4 2007!

Poetry from the 3:15 Experiment: Tiling Time Fri Aug 10 2007

May 18, 2009

Fri. Aug. 10, 2007 3:22am
written as part of the 3:15 Experiment where poets all over the world wake at 3:15am to write in a hypnopompic/hypnogogic state “between sleeps” then “publish” the results as is unedited

I think it’s cheating
if you write when
you’re still awake but
I am so tired
I think I’m half
asleep–
I should be
asleep
but since I’m still up
I thought I would
see what I can see

I have to admit
I am wearing socks
on this warm sumer night
big thick wooly hiking socks
because my feet have a
stubborn collection of
caulk
thinset
cement board powder
& god knows what else
encapsulating them
I don’t know if I have any
fingertips left
they’re so red from
scrubbing off mortar
off trowels
tiles buckets mixers

And I have to admit
I have been up til
midnight
1am
2am
and now well past 3am
retiling a bathroom
what a misnomer!
tilings the easy part
it’s finding the studs
the tools the backerboard
the tape the mortar
it’s figuring out the pattern
laying it out over and over
for hours on end

it’s 8 trips to various stores
from Buena Tile before the
showroom opens at 9am
to slipping into Lowe’s
before they close at 10pm
it’s having almost everything
not quite work the way
you think it will it ought it should

it’s having the easy things
take a lifetime &
challenging things take forever
it’s deciding today better
is perfectly all right

it’s stil going to
the Natural History Museum in LA
the Beach Boys at the Fair as planned
plus the Bangles and the Motels
of catching the fair fireworks
of attending family gatherings

there are only so many hours in the day
writing at 3:15am you discover
there are more than you thought

Looking for more poetry? There’s lots on this site on pages marked poetry and broadsides or mosey over to the Poetry Train Station or Read Write Poem.

Watch for info on readings I’ll be doing this summer in June, July, August, and September!

Quality: Some thoughts on poetry, writing & blog poets

May 18, 2009

The other day I saw 1Poet4Man’s tweet “The Pulitzer Prize for Poetry was not awarded to a blogger!” and went to read his point: http://tinyurl.com/qgg6b5

Other poets, like Paul Squires, agree with his basic point–that most blog poets suck as he puts it, and that the general poor quality of poetry on-line makes good poets look bad, and readers lose respect. Not to mention the general sense that people value more that for which they pay–or that poetry published on the web is less legitimate, or that if you publish your poetry on your blog, it’s not eligible to be published in on or off line literary journals.

To Paul’s credit, he champions many a blog poet and writer, and ralies his forces around the battle to validate the act itself of publishing on a blog. For another example, the widely published California Poet Laureate Emeritus Al Young frequently posts poems, new and old, as well as thoughtful musings on various subjects, on his website and blog, alyoung.org.

While I agree there is a lot of junk out there on the web, stuff NOT worth reading, and a lot of work that’s an “ode to joy” of being “meep,” I don’t think it’s up to me to tell people their creative projects (whatever they may be) aren’t good enough to be published on their own personal blog. And I’m not afraid that it will destroy poetry, much less blog poetry, to have anyone who wants to to be able to self-publish their own wordplay. Read more…

Pedal the Watershed: May 17 ride from the sea

May 17, 2009

single_HOW_09

Ride up the Ventura River watershed Sunday May 17! Naturalists will point out sights and identify sounds as we pedal from the Main Street bridge up to Foster Park and back on this free family friendly fun ride sponsored by the Ventura Hillsides Conservancy.

That afternoon, from 3-5pm, head to Arroyo Verde Park for a clean-up which occurs the third  Sunday of each odd numbered month.

Remember sunscreen, water, snacks, hats & helmets! See you tomorrow!
