Some Stunning Statistics about the State of Blogsville

December 7, 2008

Sometimes it’s good to get some perspective. So here’s Some Stunning Statistics about the State of Blogsville. For most sources go here or hover and you’ll see the links:

  • Over 12 million American adults currently maintain a blog (not sure what “maintain” exactly means but 12 million Americans?? wow)

  • 6% of the entire US adult population has created a blog

  • More than 147 million Americans use the Internet (ok, this stat isn’t as stunning but still that is a HUGE number considering that according to the U.S. Bureau of the Census, the resident population of the United States, projected to 12/07/08 at 23:12 GMT (EST+5) is 305,831,347–so that’s half)

  • Over 57 million Americans read blogs (how often, I don’t know–but about 1/6 of that number creates blogs!)

  • 1.7 million American adults list making money as one of the reasons they blog (so is that almost 1 in 6?? Too bad the info I got doenst discuss how they see that–gateway or google ads or Cafe Press sales or??).

  • 89% of companies surveyed say they think blogs will be more important in the next five years (yay! they get it!)

  • 9% of internet users say they have created blogs .

  • Technorati is currently tracking over 70 million blogs (I checked my rating today and I’m ranked with an authority 33 and at 188,000!)

  • over 120 thousand blogs are created every day (WOW!).

  • There are over 1.4 million new blog posts every day (WOW!).

  • 22 of the 100 most popular websites in the world are blogs (WOW!).

  • 37% of blog readers began reading blogs in 2005 or 2006 (I didn’t really read them until I started blogging November 2007).

  • 51% of blog readers shop online .

  • Blog readers average 23 hours online each week

Wow! Cool. I like the fact of 22 of the most popular websites being blogs, that still gives it a subversive edge, bringing down the big corporates. 12.000,000 million Americans! That might explain somethings about bloggoland, haha. Seriously, it’s great to get some facts, Gwendolyn. Keep up the good work.

I wish I was so optimistic about the subversiveness of blogs as you Paul. Unfortunately, I suspect that those top blogs are corporate–like CNN and Fox News.

Glad you’re interested because I’m working on some posts from sources sited in this post!

!!! i find those numbers hard to believe, especially the 12 million maintaining a blog, i wonder how many of those blogs are repeat users?

i wonder if the growing number of blogs (which in and of itself) will make blogging less “unique” or “special”, which i feel it is

i hope blogging doesn’t become an extension of myspace!

I don’t doubt the 12 million. There are 4.928 million on wordpress alone and it is not the biggest one. (Although I like it the best )

yes it does seem like a huge number of blogs–that’s why I included the US census stat of nearly 306 million citizens for contrast.

the thing tho is that while there may be 12 million blogs and nearly 5 million on WP–they are each unique and special

thanks for your contributions to the conversation! as i mentioned before i have a few more posts on the subject coming down the pike…

I wish they were all unique and special-It seems like more and more bloggers are just copy and paste jobs. You know ya gotta keep up with that two post a day quota.
