REFLECTIONS FROM
A PEACE  ACTIVIST ON
THE 10th
ANNIVERSARY
OF THE WAR IN IRAQ.

Where was I on the 19th of March 10 years ago?

I remember
watching “Shock and Awe,” in the wee hours, a fireworks phenomenon gone awry as buildings exploded with American power .

As the
“journalist” talked about “smart bombs” on CNN,
I noticed how media cameras gave us shots just close
enough for the show, but also just distant enough to
avoid the human drama and bloodshed on the ground.

Just a week earlier I, along with 10-15 million
other people around the globe took to the streets to
beg our government for patience and common
sense, to beg our leaders not to go to war.  Read more…

Day 1
Without warning, Mother sits up, closes her book.
She is the proverbial hound sensing something in the air.
We watch her in silence as she places her palm
ever so lightly, caressing the wall
as if she were taking our temperatures.

“They are here,” she says.  “I can feel the
infrared.”  She makes the sign of a hush
so she can listen to the faintest drones overhead. Read more…

Democracy or Corporacracy?  A People’s History

By Grant Marcus, guest blogger

WE NO LONGER HAVE A TWO PARTY SYSTEM, JUST ONE BIG
CORPORATE PARTY HELD AT THE EXPENSE OF ALL OF US

It’s so important, let me repeat that again:
We no longer have a two party system.  We
just have one big corporate party held at the
expense of all of us.  In other words, we have
a government of, by, and for international cor-
poratists, their lawmakers, and their lobbyists.
The voting public, our democracy, matters
least to these vipers of Capitol Hill.

The problem is severe, but not new.  The
first time it happened began a revolution.  You
see, our country was founded by corporatists–
in a way.  Or at least corporate power made us
so angry, it created heroes like Paul Revere,
Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry, and Thomas
Jefferson…who stood up to it. Read more…

IT’S TIME WE THE PEOPLE END OUR SUBSERVIENCE
TO CORPORATE AMERICA
By Grant Marcus, guest blogger
one in a series of political posts for peace

Supremacy through money,
great wealth at all cost,
greed at the expense of
indigenous peoples
throughout the world,
a government of, by, and for corporations–
with fictitious wars for fictitious reasons–
this has become our country.

In so doing, we have become no better than Nazi
Germany, killing by the millions–over a million in South
America, 3.5-4.5 million in Vietnam, over a million and
counting in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yeomen, and
Libya.  Our killings focus on race and minorities, be-
cause the old men, with old values, who run our country,
are racist.

Yes, our snot-nose is in everyone’s business.  Why?
because for war corporations, for oil, for auto, for insur-
ance companies, and banks, for manufacturing soilent
green stores like Wallmart, war is a windfall business. Read more…

WAR: JEOPARDIZING OURSELVES, OUR LAWS, OUR PLANET
Psalm Sunday
by guest blogger Grant Marcus

one in a series of political posts for peace

War aborts the lives of youth, it destroys, defiles
and discards our finite resources, and it pollutes
and heats up the planet.  Militarism around the
globe is responsible for 60% of our carbon foot-
print.

It is really simple arithemetic when you think
about it.  Or as Dwight D. Eisenhower once
said, “Every gun that is made, every warship
launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final
analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are
not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.”

In effect, war is the bad economy, and de-
prives its citizens of a life of quality. War may be
an investment for the privileged, but it is a costly
obligation for the poor.  Or as General MacCarth-
ur instructed, “war in many ways is as materially
destructive as war itself.”

The 12 #TicketToChile Finalists…and the winner is…

March 1, 2013

Well, I guess I’m not going on this trip to ChileSimply Budgeted,  Brian Mellot,  (not the Wine Predator!) won the Foods From Chile #TicketToChile contest and will be heading out to Chile in April. Instead of 10, judges actually selected 12 finalists, including myself, to submit a video. Interestingly, a number of the finalists are wine bloggers!

While I am really curious to see those videos, a quick perusal of the following links to the winning bloggers didn’t easily reveal anyone’s videos. It was fun to check out the competition and you might enjoy reading some of these blogs too: Read more…

Please choose me as the winning blogger who takes tours and participates in tastings at vineyards, olive groves, and fruit plantations. Who better than a wine blogger to wax eloquently about wine and food?8465982902_0ea11ce421_m

Please choose me to meet with local Chilean exporters and producers, and to eat specially prepared meals at the restaurants of local Chilean chefs. I love all kinds of seafood and shellfish, I love game, beef, fowl, pork, vegetables and fruits! My Wine Predator and Art Predator blogs and my twitter and facebook feeds are full of photos of fine food and wine that I share with my followers and friends.

When I was a poor college student (except for the year I worked at Ridge!), and then a student loan paying underemployed thirty-something artist/poet/writer, my go to wines were from Chile. My friends and I knew that with Chilean wines, we could get the best bang for our buck!

8465982902_0ea11ce421_mLast fall, I had the opportunity to taste four wines from Concha y Toro’s Gran Reserve Series with TasteLive  and we were happily surprised to find that you still get a BIG BANG for your buck with Chilean wine. Since Foods from Chile is hosting a contest to take a blogger to Chile (!!), I figured I’d throw my hat into the ring and turn my notes into a long over due…
