Just in time for the Oscars: Ron Well’s Top 30 Films for 2014 with notes and links to his reviews highlighted. My comments in (parentheses).

“There weren’t any movies that I REALLY disliked this year.” says Ron. “Even the ones I have at the bottom of the list were okay, though they didn’t strike me as noteworthy in one respect or another.  I seem to be out of step with what most people liked this year, but that’s ok. For me at least, it was a pretty good year for movies.”

Beautifully Animated “Song of the Sea”: Oscar Bound? Review + contenders

February 21, 2015

This year’s best animated film category for the Oscars has five strong contenders. And somehow The Lego Movie didn’t even make the list! If you ask me, that’s one of the best animated films I’ve seen in a long time–in fact, we thought it would end up on the best feature film list not just best original song (for “Everything is Awesome.”) We also really enjoyed Book of Life which missed getting a nomination. Both films offer a great story. As a parent of an 11 year old son, I am grateful that there were so many great films to share as a family in 2014 and now in 2015.

Review by Ron Wells of the film Wild which is up for two Academy Awards: Actress in a Leading Role for Reese Witherspoon and Actress in a Supporting Role for Laura Dern. Note: I walked all 28oo miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in the mid-80s making me one of the first 20 women and the first 200 people to complete it. More notes on this below Ron’s review.

The Greek hero Odysseus had nothing on Cheryl Strayed who hiked the 1,100 miles of the Pacific Coast Trail by herself, experiencing everything from anger and loneliness, Read more…

1984? No, “Citizenfour” Oscar nominated documentary

February 17, 2015
Review by Ron Wells of Citizenfour. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Film, the title refers to Edward Snowden’s code name.  The Academy Awards will be held this Sunday, February 22.
 10988498_799460273478953_7932572082191280517_n
In 2013, computer analyst Edward Snowden leaked classified documents he had obtained from the National Security Agency detailing the extent of government surveillance of U.S. citizens. After going into hiding to avoid extradition and arrest, Snowden himself became a news story that threatened to eclipse the implications of the information he had revealed.
George Orwell was a few years off, but his novel, 1984, has now come true in more ways than even he could have imagined. Laura Poitras’ riveting and important documentary, Citizenfour, is enough to make anyone want to scream out loud that its contents can’t be true. This couldn’t really be happening. Not in the United States. Not in the land of the free.

Want Burning Man Tickets 2015? Act NOW!

February 13, 2015

IMG_7475

People tell me that they can’t go to Burning Man because of the heat.

And I tell them the heat is nothing. Not a big deal.

Well then, they’ll say, what about the dust storms? And the wind?

The wind? That’s nothing.

The worse thing about the dust storms and the wind is cleaning up when you get home. And then you’re home where there’s endless cold beer and cold water and hot showers. And you’ve probably slept some.

And it’s not too crowded either. So what is the worse thing about Burning Man? What’s the biggest reason why we don’t want to go again?

The lines for tickets, for GATE, and for Exodus. Seriously. That’s the worse thing about Burning Man for me.

Well that and the plug and play camps aka commercial camps, but that’s a different blog post. Read more…
