Happy birthday, Carménère!
And yes we’re celebrating another “wine day” in November! Following Merlot Day, Tempranillo Day, and Zinfandel Day comes Carménère Day on November 24 which is also Thanksgiving in the United States.
And wine is definitely something that I am grateful for this Thanksgiving!
But why is Carménère Day on Thanksgiving?Had you even heard of Carménère wine or Carménère Day?

RIP Leon Russell 1942-2016
Leon Russell (born Claude Russell Bridges; April 2, 1942 – November 13, 2016) by Ron Wells.
My first real arena concert was seeing Leon Russell in the early 70’s in Long Beach, CA.
It was here where I really learned the power of a rock concert thanks to Leon’s playing along with his powerful band and back-up singers. The show was recorded for a three album set called Leon Live, which I still own today. Read more…

Veteran’s Day is always celebrated on November 11–to remember the last day of the “Great War,” and those who fought in it, and wars before and since. Like Independence Day, it is not and should not be one of our holidays that we insist on turning into a three day weekend… even though this year it is!

A Tribute to Leonard Cohen, RIP: A man whose songs were like cracks that let light in
A Tribute to Leonard Norman Cohen (21 September 1934 – 10 November 2016)
by guest blogger Ron Wells
From “That’s No Way to Say Goodbye” by Leonard Cohen:
I loved you in the morning, our kisses deep and warm
Your hair upon the pillow like a sleepy golden storm
Yes, many loved before us, I know that we are not new
In city and in forest, they smiled like me and you
But now it’s come to distances and both of us must try
Your eyes are soft with sorrow
Hey, that’s no way to say goodbye

Weird Al Yankovic is performing in LA Sat. Oct 29 at the Shrine Auditorium as part of the Supreme Festival, so this morning, KCRW played his 2014 hit “Word Crimes” which not only parodies “Blurred Lines” brilliantly but also teaches some great grammar lessons!

With Desert Trip aka Oldchella happening last weekend and this, no surprise that the esteemed artists performing there are on my mind–and on my favorite radio station, KCRW.
Living just north of Los Angeles, we would have definitely attended if we could have gotten tickets; we’ve attended Coachella twice (2002 and 2003) and we have tickets for 2017. Even with 70,000 other fans, it would have been worth it to experience these bands, some of them for the first time for me.
At the last minute, last Thursday, we were able to score tickets to see The Who at the 4500 seat Santa Barbara Bowl, my first time seeing The Who. I never thought I’d see them and then in such an intimate beautiful venue as the Bowl, just a quick 30 minute drive up the coast. I could have gotten a Who Desert Trip t-shirt but in the end went for one that listed the show in Santa Barbara and that celebrates their 51 years.
Today I had two more Desert Trip aka Oldchella surprises: Read more…
On Friday, my son’s assistant principal pulled him aside to ask: “Have you really been to Burning Man? What’s it like?”
My 12-year-old son might as well as said it’s “MAGIC” because that’s the closest explanation there is: it’s almost like opening your eyes and finding out that you’re really a wizard and that you’re attending Hogwarts and not the middle school across the street. Read more…
