RIP John Robert “Joe” Cocker (20 May 1944 – 22 December 2014)
According to Wikipedia, “John Robert “Joe” CockerOBE (20 May 1944 – 22 December 2014) was an English rock and blues singer, who came to popularity in the 1960s, and was known for his gritty voice, his spasmodic body movement in performance, and his cover versions of popular songs, particularly those of the Beatles. His cover of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends” reached number one in the UK in 1968, and he performed the song live at Woodstock in 1969 (pictured). His 1975 cover of Billy Preston’s “You Are So Beautiful“, reached number five in the US.” Even though he’s gone and left us today, we’ll keep feelin alright listening to his hits like this one recorded live in concert from 1992, one of my favorites:
Music and film critic Ron Wells shares that “For whatever reason, before I heard Dave Mason sing “Feelin’ Alright,” I heard Joe Cocker sing it and it became one of my favorite all time rock songs. Joe, with his unusual singing and performing style, had the ability to do that with a lot of songs.”
Ron Wells curated the following:
“As I’ve said to my friends, this title just about puts it all into focus. It’s called ‘With a Little Help from My Friends.’ Remember it.”—Joe Cocker
