For the Best Job in the World, it comes down to one question: MANGO or AVOCADO?

February 17, 2009

That’s right, rumour has it that THIS is the big question, the ultimate question that THEY (Queensland Tourism) will be asking of the candidates for the best job in the world as caretaker of the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef: if you had to choose between the two, between mango or avocado, had to choose one and not the other, had to forswear and forsake one for the other–

which would you choose: MANGO or AVOCADO?

mango mango mango mangoooooo….it just rolls off your tongue wraps around your lips cool and slippery soft and luscious mangooo mmnnnn

orGwen Avocado

ahhhhvoooohhhcaaahhhhdohhhh…oh oh oh! rich and sumptious satisfying and oily subtle nuttiness and sweetness is yours for the taking by scooping with your spoon that soft soft flesh

mango1Obviously, the right choice is MANGO…a fruit thriving in Queensland,  Australia, ripe for the picking!

but how could I leave avocado fruit of my youth orchards of my grandfather memories of guacamole behind? There’s even a Gwen avocado–see the picture??

Don’t do it! Don’t! Don’t make me choose! Such torture to be unendured… no more avocado spooned into warm sourdough bread? no mango in fish tacos? no avocado in fish tacos? no mango with India pale ale? no guacamole with margaritas?

I was first posed this question at a party in Tucson. When I immediately claimed avocado as my choice, little did I know I was being vetted as a potential date for a friend’s friend. When he heard I’d chosen avocado, he almost didn’t call me. But when I took him into my grandfather’s avocado trees, and spooned ripe avocado into his mouth, well, you can imagine, his opinions of me and of avocado were radically changed.

So which would I choose? For six months, no problem–I’ve had avocados at my fingertips my whole life–I’ll take MANGO!

(No I’m not cracking up from the pressure and excitement of preparing my video application for the Best Job In the World…just thought I’d take a post out of all the seriousness for a little silliness! And hey, you never know, the answer to this question may provide them with deep psychological insight into the applicants! Or maybe I just need more sleep! Yummy, Bowen Mangos, so juicy you have to lie in the bath to eat them. Avocado on toast with lemon and pepper. Hmm, must one choose?

Defnitely could go without avocado for 6 months, though it would be a sad thing. But mango… yummy.

So, tell more about this spooning of fresh avocado right from the tree… that sounds like a delicious experience we’d love to be a part of. What part of the world are you from? Oh, and send me a message back with a link to your video… would love to check out your application!

Hey Jonathan, thanks for stopping by!

If you’re ever in Ventura, southern California, between LA and Santa Barbara, let me know and I’ll take you climbing in my grandfather’s trees! (well, they’re mine now!) If we’re lucky, we’ll find some ripe avocados without too many teeth marks in them–the ripe ones fall to the ground and we have to get them before the critters do!

My YouTube quality is poor for some reason unknown at this time and I’m trying to fix it before the big reveal!

Hi Art Predator, I would definitely go with mango! My love of mango was fostered during my 3 years of living in the Dominican Republic. Wonder how the Aussie ones will compare.

By the way, Jonathan above is also one of the members of http://islandreefjob.ning.com if you haven’t connected the dots, you may want to befriend each other over there.

I saw your video today too – really well done!
