My Wine Predator blog hits a major milestone!

don&sonspapers2013

Between preparing for my doctoral classes in ecopsychology and grading my students’ finals, I just had to go into hiding the past two weeks which meant while I participated in a few twitter tastings, I didn’t get any blogging done on this site and very little on my other sites (including Art Predator, Compassionate Rebel, Whisper Down The Write Alley). And yes. pictured with the Don and Sons Pinot Noir vertical from last Thursday’s twitter tasting are just a portion of the research papers and finals I was reading in order to get my grades in!

Even though I am still not completely done with my grading (and there’s another twitter tasting tonight!), today I was doing a little blogging on Art Predator and ended up checking my stats over here to discover  that about midnight last night, my blog hit 50,000 page views! Which, for a wine…

Rolling Stones: Anaheim May 2013 –Review by Ron Wells

May 29, 2013
321529_10151592976543287_626774157_n
The set list says more about the Rolling Stones concert in Anaheim than anything else. It’s like the coolest jukebox one could ever imagine, and yet you feel like bitching about the songs that weren’t included. But hey, what would you take out? No, they could play all night long and you still wouldn’t hear every song you wanted to hear.
On at 8:50 PM:
Get Off Of My Cloud
It’s Only Rock n’ Roll
Paint it Black
Gimme Shelter
You Got Me Rocking
Wild Horses
Bitch (with Dave Grohl)
Shattered (first time on this tour)
Doom And Gloom
One More Shot
Honkey Tonk Women
You Got the Silver (with Keith on lead vocal) (first time on this tour)
Happy (with Keith on lead vocal)
Miss You
Start Me Up
Tumbling Dice
Brown Sugar
Sympathy For The Devil
You Can’t Always Get What You Want (with the USC Thornton Chamber Choir)
Jumpin’ Jack Flash
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
Off at 11:05 PM
So one is left with the show you got. And a damn fine show it was. Was it worth $175 to $2,000? Not for me or anyone I know, but for others it sure seemed like that was ok. For my friends and I, $85 was the bargain of bargains. Yes, we sat 3 rows from the top at the opposite end of the arena, but who cares. It was fantastic. We heard about some people in line behind us who got pit tickets with their $85 random envelope, and so, good for them! That’s the way it should be. The seats behind the stage were left vacant, but the rest of the arena was 90% full with the majority of fans standing and dancing for almost all of the show; even those who were up high near the ceiling.

Earth’s CO2 Hits 400ppm

May 11, 2013

ASE_McCarty3-3sc900

James Hillman (1998: 101):  The anima mundi indicates the animated possibilities presented by each event as it is, its sensuous presentation as a face.”

On Thursday, May 9, two weeks after Earth Day, on the same day as the eclipse pictured, we hit 400ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere.

“If humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed and to which life on Earth is adapted, paleoclimate evidence and ongoing climate change suggest that CO2 will need to be reduced from its current 385ppm to at most 350ppm,” writes NASA’s James Hansen (2008).

According Pieter Tans of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as reported to AP, the last time we hit 400ppm was 2 million years ago,  during the Pleistocene Era when “It was much warmer than it is today.”  Back then, forests grew in Greenland, converting the carbon in the air into trees, and sea level was 33 to 66 feet higher than it is today. Other scientists say it may have been as long ago as 10 million years that we had this much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

And modern humans have only been around for 100,000 years.

In 1958, it was 315ppm. Before the Industrial Revolution, it was 280ppm, and following the Ice Age, it was 200ppm. These days, we are adding 2 ppm PER YEAR. Read more…

Events can be anything from wine pairing dinners to music events to structured tastings. Search for an event near you or register for the Great Wine Tour Giveaway.

Or create your own event! You don’t have to visit Napa–head out on Saturday to a winery near you and celebrate! You may be surprised by what you’ll find in a few hours drive. Please post in the comments and tell us which wineries are YOUR favorites to visit?

“Create Yourself. Be Yourself Your Poem.” Oscar Wilde

April 24, 2013

I love this quote from Oscar Wilde! How are you enjoying National Poetry Month? Are you writing or reading poetry?

Gwendolyn Alley aka Art Predator's avatarCompassionate Rebel

“Create Yourself.
Be yourself your poem.”

–Oscar Wilde

Dharma.

Indifference.

I have been working on creating myself and being my own poem for a long time but especially all summer, and more so since August 2011 when I didn’t go back to the college where I usually teach.

Instead, I worked as a nanny at Burning Man, then I started a Yogic Philosphy class at the Ventura Yoga Studio with Bryan Legere, then I started a PhD in Depth Psychology at the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara.

As part of my homework for my yoga philosphy class, we are to write down and read and review our dharma every day. And I tell you life has given me many opportunities since February 2010 to ponder it.

We also have to practice a different emotional state each day. Today it’s “indifference” which my teacher also expressed as non-judgement.

Today as…

How to celebrate Earth Day: Boycott the internet & #StopCISPA

April 22, 2013

I had other plans for an Earth Day post but instead, I am supporting the #StopCISPA Boycott.

If WordPress makes it possible, I will black out my site until Tuesday.

For now, this cat (which you can download and upload to facebook and twitter to explain your absence),  video,CISPAcat and message from Anonymous will have to suffice.

What is CISPA?

Under the guise of cyber-security, CISPA (the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act) is a bill that would grant corporations the power to share our emails, Facebook messages, and other sensitive online data with the government – all without a warrant.

CISPA would kill online privacy as we know it – nullifying the laws that require big corporations to keep our information private from government agencies like the National Security Agency. Those corporations wouldn’t have to notify you that they have done this and you wouldn’t be able to take legal action against them if they made a mistake when sharing your information.

While strong information security is critical to privacy and civil liberties, CISPA does almost nothing to prevent this. All it does is give the government access to your information.

We beat CISPA last year when hundreds of thousands of Americans signed online petitions to let lawmakers know that our online privacy rights are not negotiable. But this bill is back and politicians who want the government to be able to read your emails and see what you purchase online are hoping you won’t speak out this time.

Together we can beat CISPA again!

How to save our blue planet: embrace the shadow

April 21, 2013

For Earth Day 2012: Some thoughts on how to save our planet via a change in consciousness…

Gwendolyn Alley aka Art Predator's avatarCompassionate Rebel

As we approach Earth Day 2013, I am working on a Ecopsychological paper for my Post Jungian Psychology class and reviewing the readings we’ve done looking for pertinent quotes and ideas to support my thesis. These quotations from a 2011 essay by S. Nouriani seemed pertinent not only to my paper but to the planet’s Earth Day celebrations so I thought I would share them here.

“We are at a point in the evolution of consciousness and the history of human-kind where we must begin to integrate the collective shadow of humanity—or it will destroy all human life on Earth.”

Nouriani (2011 p. 97) quotes Singer (2003) as suggesting that “to deal with charged cultural complexes, we have to withdraw our negative projections and take in the darkness that we have projected onto the Other…

Our personal and collective shadows can turn anything into a weapon of mass destruction.

Can…
