Vote!
Happy Election Day! This has been one heckuva an election season! For some of you, due to age or apathy, this may be your first presidential election! No matter where you live, if you haven’t voted yet, it is important to vote TODAY before your polls close– usually around 8p– because TODAY is the FINAL DAY to VOTE.
In California, if you haven’t already voted, you have until 8pm to vote in person, drop your ballot in a mailbox for today’s postmark, or drop off your absentee ballot at a number of places. Where I live in Ventura County, that includes the Wright Center at Ventura College, the Ventura County Government Center, and Ventura City Hall. You can also vote at any Vote Center in Ventura County.
Didn’t get registered by the deadline? Again, each state has their own rules. In California, the deadline is Oct. 21, but you can still vote provisionally. This is also true in many other states: if you didn’t register yet, you can still vote provisionally. You can find details online, or go to the closest polling station.
Feeling the stress? Many communities are offering support. At the community college district where I teach, we have many resources for students, staff, and faculty.
Know you are not alone. Many of us are feeling distracted and exhausted by it all.
Our President at Ventura College Claudia Lourido-Habib sent out an email with the following message:
“For many, this period is one of anticipation, and for some, it brings a sense of uncertainty and tension. The rhetoric we hear and see around us can be challenging, and I know that for many of you, this moment carries a range of emotions.
“At Ventura College, we pride ourselves on being a community rooted in respect, learning, inclusivity, and support. Regardless of the outcome of the election, we remain committed to these values and to each other. As students, faculty, and staff, we’re a part of a mission to strengthen and uplift one another, to foster open-mindedness, and to engage thoughtfully with the world around us. These principles don’t waver with any election outcome; they are what bind us together.
“If you find yourself feeling stressed or anxious during this time, I encourage you to reach out to our Student Health Center for counseling or connect with someone on campus who can offer support. We are all here for you.”
