What’s Up This Weekend? 12/1/23 Art Predator Performs and more free fun!

November 30, 2023

12/1/23 5 x 5 x 5

Now that my 12 week late start hybrid class is over (save for getting in grades!), I’ve got my head above water a bit and I can see there’s lots going on in the 805 this weekend, so for my Ventura County, Ventura College, and LA and SB readers, I wanted to offer a quick round up! And yes I am performing at 5 x 5 x 5 on Friday 12/1/23 at Art City!

short films VC

Tonight and tonight only, Ventura College film students share their short films. It’s free but seating is limited and you have to RSVP. Screening starts at 8pm today in the Applied Science Center with showings of about 20 short films each lasting around five minutes. One of my students Julian Tlaxcuapan has a film in the show titled “Karma” and it includes two of my students, Día Avila and Diane Dominguez. The event is free but reserving  a seat is required: https://ventura.vbotickets.com/events

Bell Arts

On 12/1/23 during First Fridays when many downtown and Ventura Avenue galleries and studios are open late including Bell Arts (see above), I will be performing alongside Steve Aguilar, Brad Bauer, Kevin Carmen, and Pat Miskel at John White’s 5 x 5 x 5 held at Art City 175 Dubbers Ave, Ventura CA 93001. BYOB and bring a jacket too as the venue is more outside than in! If you’ve never been to Art City Studios and Stone Sales, try to swing by during the daylight — it’s an amazing place, and the only reason why I stayed in Ventura back in the mid-90s.

Downtown Ventura Holiday Tree Lighting Page 1

First Fridays starts at 5pm or so and 5 x 5 x 5 starts at 8p. At some point I think they’re lighting the Christmas tree at the San Buenaventura Mission, and snow will fall by the stage where live music will be playing.

winter wine walk

More snow will fall, and music will play during Ventura’s Winter Wine Walk which follows the Street Fair in downtown on Sat. Dec. 2 which follows the Ventura Farmer’s Market where you can taste wine from local growers and vintners Clos des Amis. What better than local food and wine for your holiday gatherings!

Yoga Jones

Lots will be going on all day Saturday in many Ventura venues including Yoga Jones holiday market and silent disco.

Vita Arts

On Sat. Dec. 2 from 4-7p, Vita Arts offers a show with prints from 46 regional artists where funds raised by the art go to help youth trend programs there.

Crop Swap

Also on the first Saturday of the month, check out the 805 Crop Swap where farmers and folk bring finds to share. Now is the time to get your winter garden growing!  I might bring some sweet pea seeds to trade or cuttings of dahlias or poinsettias; Ventura was known as the Poinsettia City — and they feed monarchs or which we have plenty this time of year.

art opening: Moore, Carman, Beers

For more art on Sunday from 1-3p, head to the WAV #301 for art by Jacqueline Moore, Kevin Carman, and Joel Beers.

Looking ahead and want more wine? The Cave in Ventura Wine Company’s Holiday Champagne Gala fortunately serves more than just Champagne at its annual holiday event, held this year on Thursday, December 7th from 4pm – 8pm. Tickets are $59.
