It’s almost winter! That means around here you can see the Channel Islands on sunny days, my desk is covered with student research papers, and at Ventura College, my students and I are working on our class publications where we create broadsides of a written work and make enough copies for everyone. I’m going to be submitting my water poem that I wrote as a commission for the City of Pasadena (read the beginning of it here).
Tomorrow, Thursday December 5, a few of my students and I will attend Catherine Dain’s featured reading at EP Foster Library in the Topping Room at 7:30pm651 E. Main Street. Ventura. The reading is hosted by Phil Taggart and it’s followed by an open mic where some of my students will read. (More students will read next Thursday, December 12, when we have our class publication to share following Paul Willis’ feature.)
Above is Catherine Dain reading one of her poems; below is another poem by Catherine Dain:
Is there life after death?
Of course.
Ask any actor.
The hard part about death
Is the frozen glaze
As the camera zooms in for the closeup.
Or the held breath
Until the curtain falls.
Then life rushes back
With the applause of the crew,
The adoring audience.
Is there life after death?
I believe so.
I have felt the spirit in the room
When the body lies still.
I have heard the voice in my head
As I drove home alone.
I have seen the face in my dreams,
Laughing one more time.
Is there love after death?
When my heart yearns to feel
Another beating heart
That is the question
I cannot answer.
