Whine-less Wine Wednesday: Art Predator’s Burning Man Camp 5:15pm at 515 & DNA

September 1, 2009

twisted-oakThis is no ordinary wine tasting–and these are no ordinary wines!

I asked several wineries, most of which I got to know from the Wine Bloggers Conference, wineries which offer extra-ordinary wines, wines that would be exceptionally Playa-Licious, if they wanted to participate in an unusual tasting event–a Wine Tasting on Wine Wednesday at Burning Man! I asked them for some of my favorites–and these forward thinking wineries said YES!

If we can’t get to the playa, they said, we can still play with ya!

Has it ever been done–a serious wine tasting at Burning Man? I mean, there’s is Spanky’s Wine Bar, but I suspect they are more into the spankings than the wine…

So what wines will we be tasting on Whineless Wine Wednesday at Art Predator’s Camp, DNA & 515 in Kidsville? (And for Helloween Trick or Treaters Friday night, and for Saturday Soccer Brunch if we have any left!) I’m bringing (thanks to some help from Kim and her air-conditioned RV!):

Michel-Schlumberger: sustainably grown in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County; they do mostly awesome Bordeaux style wines. I asked for Pinot Blanc and Le Fou, a Pinot Noir, classy classy but willing to be FUN FUN!

Bonny Doon: biodynamic and Demeter certified; Vinferno (of course! for after the Burn!), plus red and white Rhone style Cigare Volant–you know, the wine with the alien on the screwtop?

Twisted Oak: home of the Rubber Chicken forest, Calaveras county–a variety of Rhone style wines like Potty Mouth Red and White full of MSG, Torcido (grenache), and more! Are you Twisted? Then you’ll love these wines!

Frei Brothers Frei Ranch: sustainably farmed, committed to protect wildlife habitat in surrounding Sonoma County, mmmm, zinfandel, mmmm syrah…

Vino V: sustainably farmed, indigenous yeast, Santa Barbara county blend

What are you bringing? Appetizers? Wine? Glass? Big Smile? Goofy get-up? Rubber chickens? Camera? Let’s make this a wine tasting we’ll never forget!

Can’t make it? Have your own Whineless Wednesday Wine Tasting! Check back here for our tasting notes and pictures and leave links to your own! I hope to have a post up about it on Thursday!

A wine tasting event AT Burning Man? Wow! I’m not sure whether to praise the effort–which is akin to Columbus sailing into uncharted waters–or see this cultural development as a sign that The Apocalypse is near. (Honestly, I just can’t decide.) Much love, regardless!
