Burning Man 2009: Hydrate NOW & rest!
My previous post has 10 Very Important Tasks To Do before you leave for Burning Man, plus directions on how to get there, plus two bonus tips.
This post is short and to the point about 2 VERY VERY important practices you want to commence NOW: 1) Get plenty of sleep and 2) get in the habit of drinking water NOW so you’re well hydrated when you get on the playa AND you’re in the habit of drinking lots of water.
Many many people are irritated and miserable their first 24 hours on the playa: traveling they have neglected to drink enough water along the way combined with the dryness and heat of the desert plus the elevation makes for a bad scene when they get there.
When I moved from Santa Cruz to Reno for grad school one hot August many years ago, it seemed like I couldn’t get enough water. I felt thirsty and dry all the time. I was constantly drinking water, peeing , and taking showers to cool off. It took me a year to stop feeling that way. And that’s what I heard from many other transplants: that it takes about a year for your body to adjust to the demands of the desert.
So give your body a break–start drinking water now and get in the habit of carrying water with you everywhere you go.
A corollary to this: in the madness that is preparing for Burning Man in these closing days before leaving, GET SOME REST. Do your best to get at least 7 if not 8 or 9 hours of sleep before you get out there so you will have the stamina necessary for 24 hours playa life.
