2 More Kids Halloween Poems

September 30, 2008

My featured poets again this week are kids from my son’s class; last week, as you may recall, I posted “I Am A Scary Skeleton Pirate” and “I Am A Wicked Evil Gruesome Witch.” Then my son and I produced a video for “Skeleton Pirate” (here).

So today I offer, from a group of kindergarten and first grade girls, “I am a Vampire Candy Monster” and from a group of boys, “I am a Dark Black Werewolf with Piercing White Eyes” as well as drawings by two girls, “Halloween Picture” (above) and “Witches Writing in Witch Language” (below).

I Am A Vampire Candy Monster

I am a vampire candy monster!
I wonder about eating all the candy at Halloween.
I hear kids eating candy!
I see lucky candy.
I want candy.
I am a vampire candy monster!

I pretend bats are my friends.
I feel sad because I can’t see my candy.
I touch soft black bats.
I worry about sticky candy
because sticky candy sticks to my fur and my hand.
I cry when I don’t get any candy to eat.
I am a vampire candy monster.

I understand that candy makes me happy.
I believe in myself and my friends.
I say, “Wagga wagga, I like candy!”
I dream about flying and changing into bats.
I try to fly and steal candy.
I hope to find candy.
I am THE VAMPIRE CANDY MONSTER!

And from a group of kindergarten and first grade boys:

I Am A Werewolf

I am a dark black werewolf with piercing white eyes!
I wonder if I can eat anybody
and if there are other haunted houses like mine.
I hear a lot of people talking
and I wonder if I can catch them and eat them.
I see my friend Mummy and he’s hunting humans.
I want meat! Chicken!
and to go to the beach to catch sharks.
I am a dark black werewolf  with piercing white eyes!

I pretend I am a human
by wearing a disguise and acting like one.
I feel the wood floor under my bare feet
and the bricks on the walls.
I touch blood and flesh and free meat.
I worry that I’m going to be killed
when I’m in wolf form.
I cry when I see my family get killed.
I am a dark black werewolf with piercing white eyes!

I understand about “don’t kill anybody”
but I really want to because my dinner is people.
I say, “That human is mine!”
I dream of people attacking me
and being free of this institution
and being able to use my powers anywhere I want.
I try not to kill people and not get killed
in the dark night when the soldiers are there.
I hope for spaghetti and meatballs.
I am a dark black werewolf with piercing white eyes!

Just so you know: this is witch language writing on the right side of the picture (it might just look like loops to you but now you know they are not). If you look carefully at the witches, you will see they are smiling.

Cool. Children are natural poets, minds like swirls and words not set in concrete.
