Earth Hour

Dear Earth Hour Supporter,

We need your help in making sure America turns out for Earth Hour 2009 on March 28th at 8:30 p.m. Here are 23 things you can do RIGHT NOW to take action:

  1. Network: Tweet and update your Facebook and MySpace pages with the latest on Earth Hour.

  2. Talk: An ancient form of social networking where you tell two friends, and they tell two friends and so on…

  3. Lobby: Write to your US Senator or Member of Congress asking for swift action on climate change via the automated system on www.EarthHourUS.org/raiseyourvoice.

  4. Urge: Your mayor, governor and state legislators to turn out the lights on public buildings and facilities and issue a resolution in support of Earth Hour. You can also inspire a child to write to the president or Congress: www.EarthHourKids.org/Write.pdf

  5. Visit: www.EarthHourUS.org/toolkits.php to bring Earth Hour to your city, town, community or school system.

  6. Decorate: Your homepage. Earth Hour is the new black. The stylish “60: Earth Hour” logo makes a tasteful addition to any website. Available at: www.EarthHourUS.org/toolkits.php#Downloads

  7. Link: Your corporate website to EarthHourUS.org

  8. Download: Your own limited edition Shepard Fairey “Vote Earth” poster here.

  9. Print: Extra Earth Hour posters and ask your school, community or local businesses to hang them in public spaces and places.

  10. Invite: Why be lonely in the dark? Download fun tips on organizing an Earth Hour “Lights Out” party at www.EarthHourUS.org/action_individual.php

  11. Write: A letter to the editor of your local newspaper and ask your community to turn out for Earth Hour.

  12. Plan: An event to celebrate Earth Hour with your church group, civic organization or Brownie Troop.

  13. Notify: Local TV and radio stations and newspapers about how you intend to celebrate Earth Hour and ask them to cover it!

  14. Organize: A school assembly or event about Earth Hour. Check out the toolkits for schools at www.EarthHourUS.org/toolkits and visit our kids site for more fun ideas at www.EarthHourKids.org.

  15. Create: A video demonstrating what you plan to do when the lights go out and post it on YouTube.

  16. Blog: All about it. Earth Hour has been mentioned on more than 15,000 blogs to date.

  17. Follow: Google‘s example and darken your company’s homepage for Earth Hour 2009.

  18. Mail: Your friends, family, and neighbors Earth Hour postcards reminding them to turn out.

  19. Think: About ways you can reduce your CO2 footprint and increase your energy efficiency—at home or work. With a child, you can take our Earth Hour Power fun and quick quiz at www.EarthHourKids.org/sur.html

  20. Worship: The planet. Many religious organizations throughout the US are supporting Earth Hour. Invite your church, temple, or mosque to Vote Earth!

  21. Join: The National Conversation on Climate Action, organized by ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, Earth Day Network and AmericaSpeaks. The National Conversation is an unprecedented community engagement effort that is designed for and driven by local governments. Register at www.ClimateConversation.org.

  22. Teach: Kids about the importance of preserving our planet and all its creatures. Explain that they can be part of the climate change solution by writing their congressperson, senator or the President and asking for action on this important issue. Visit www.EarthHourKids.org for ways to involve children in our movement.

  23. Earth: The SequelDiscover: The race to develop low-carbon energy in time to stop global warming has begun, and a new Discovery Channel special brings cutting-edge green energy technologies to life as never before.

THE MOVEMENT IS GROWING DAILY: Nearly 100 US cities, towns, and communities have now pledged to “turn out” for the largest climate event in history, with more signing up each day. Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Pittsburgh, Tucson, Orlando, and not one, but two Arlingtons—Texas and Virginia! We’re anxious to hear from four more Arlingtons in Washington State, Illinois, Tennessee, and Massachusetts! A complete list of US cities can be found at: www.EarthHourUS.org/map.php.

Globally, 1,485 cities are going dark, with Berlin, Germany becoming the latest major European city to sign on to turn out. Earth Hour is now taking place in 9 out of the Top 10 cities in the world by population.

ALANIS MORISSETTE SUPPORTS “BIGGEST TURN-OFF” IN HISTORY: View the “toenail” ad that has everyone talking.

“TURN OUT, TAKE ACTION” IS MORE THAN JUST A SLOGAN: We need you to let your elected leaders know that you care about the future of our planet and are looking to them to take action in support of climate legislation. You can send a letter to your Member of Congress and Senator with a few mouse clicks at the Earth Hour website at www.EarthHourUS.org/raiseyourvoice.

Art Predator notes you can also address your local city council and ask them to support this action as well as write a letter to the editor of you local paper urging others in your community to take part.
