53 Interesting Facts About the Number 53 #33: Sunset’s 53 container gardens

August 23, 2015

School may be back in session for many and summer may be almost over for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, but unless you live in the Arctic circle, now is as good a time as any to plant a container garden. Sunset magazine recently featured not 10, not 25, not 40 or 50 but 53 container gardens! A few of my favorites a pictured above. And since on Sundays I post an interesting fact about the number 53, this Sunday I’m featuring these 53 container gardens.

Don’t have a container? Did you know you can just buy a bag of planted mix and tear a few holes in it and plant seeds or seedlings directly into the bag of soil? You can plant vegetables like beets or salad greens or peas —they all do well in the fall and you should be able to get a crop by Thanksgiving! Salad greens you can just harvest a few leaves at a time. Or, if you buy heads of lettuce like romaine and others you can just plant the ends of the heads of lettuce directly in the bag of soil and start harvesting lettuce leaves within 10 days! You can also drop the ends of a head of lettuce in a glass of water. Change the water every day or so and you’ll soon be surprised to see a crop of lettuce growing!

You’d be surprised how much you can grow in a small space! Check out my garden!

I’m a fan of container gardens for succulents as well as many flowering plants. Lavenders and natives do better when planted in the ground. My yard is small, but I have it all-succulents, natives and herbs!
